Bulls run riot at Loftus to thrash Lions in derby demolition

The Vodacom Bulls produced a dominant display to thrash the Lions 57-15 in their United Rugby Championship clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Fans were expecting a much closer contest, but the hosts ran in nine tries to secure a comprehensive victory, taking control in the first half before extending their advantage after the break as they jumped to second place on the URC log.

Harold Vorster opened the scoring in the 10th minute, showing excellent awareness to put a kick through, collect the ball and finish. The Lions responded through Sibabalo Qoma, who powered over the line before Chris Smith's conversion gave the visitors a 7-5 lead.

The Bulls quickly regained control, with hooker Johan Grobbelaar forcing his way over from close range after the Lions were reduced to 14 men when scrumhalf Morne van den Berg received a yellow card for a cynical knock-on.

Canan Moodie then made a telling contribution, breaking through the Lions' defence before offloading to Cameron Hanekom, who crossed for the Bulls' third try. Curwin Bosch converted to extend the advantage, although Smith kept the visitors in touch with a penalty.

Hanekom struck again before half-time, completing his brace with an impressive individual effort to help the Bulls establish a commanding 31-10 lead at the break. Jeandre Rudolph also crossed during a dominant spell for the hosts.

The Bulls picked up where they left off after the restart, with Springbok winger Moodie getting over the line to stretch the lead further. The Lions briefly responded when substitute hooker Morne Brandon finished a driving maul, but Smith was unable to add the conversion.

The visitors struggled to contain the Bulls' attacking threat as the second half progressed. Despite a disallowed try for substitute Cheswill Jooste following a TMO review for obstruction, the hosts continued to pile on the pressure.

JF van Heerden crossed for another Bulls try in the 68th minute, with replacement flyhalf Handre Pollard adding the conversion. Jooste then had his moment, chasing down a well-judged grubber from Vorster to score in the closing stages before Pollard's successful kick took the Bulls beyond the 50-point mark.

The Bulls added one final score via Seb de Klerk to seal a convincing 57-15 victory, leaving the Lions with plenty of questions to answer.
