UJ’s Boitumelo Mahloko on chasing 2026 Varsity Netball title

UJ secured a 50-40 victory over UFS Kovsies at the Wits Sports Hall on Sunday, making it five wins from five matches and moving them to the top of the log with 20 points.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mahloko says beating one of the tournament’s most respected sides has given the team further belief.

“We honestly had a decent run against Kovsies. We were all excited to play our part, and we all bought into the game plan and executed it perfectly. We knew what we wanted and what we wanted to achieve.

“We were facing a tough team. Collecting points against Kovsies is a big deal because they are one of the most respected teams in this championship. We have not lost a single game and we don’t want to drop the ball,” said Mahloko.

UJ have also recorded wins over Maties, Wits and CUT, with Mahloko crediting the team’s unity and consistency for their impressive start.

“The connection in the group has been amazing and everybody is really buying into the game plan. The ultimate goal we want to achieve at the end is winning the tournament.

“The team has been incredibly consistent and we play for each other,” added Mahloko.

UJ’s next challenge is against the University of Pretoria at Tuks Rembrandt Hall on 13 September. The 25-year-old says they must remain focused and maintain their momentum as they chase the title.

“We are facing another tough team this coming Sunday. I believe consistency and really just focusing on us will get us the result we want.

“We just need to consistently play good netball, stick to the plan and the results will keep coming. We want a new winner this season and someone has to dethrone UNW,” she expressed.
