Temba Bavuma Foundation spreads hope with Yeoville Freedom Day food drive

Bavuma, through the Temba Bavuma Foundation in partnership with the Frida Hartley Shelter, hosted the Community Food Drive in Yeoville. The initiative aims to support over 700 vulnerable individuals, aligning with the shelter’s growing demand for daily meals. 

Bavuma shares why it was important for his foundation to embark on this drive, in one of the most challenging areas in Johannesburg... 

"Today is Freedom Day and we know the significance around that as South Africans. We've come as the foundation to host one of our flagship events here at the Frida Hartley Shelter. It's our Freedom Day food drive where we provide food to the shelter, but also the community of Yeoville.

"This was an opportunity for us to bring a sense of dignity and pride to the people and to engage about Freedom Day and what it means to all of us, and remind us about humility."

The partnership between the Bavuma Foundation and the Frida Hartley Shelter started during the COVID times, and they have focused on different activities and areas of need for the shelter...

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary since it was founded in 2016, Bavuma’s Foundation focuses on empowering young people through education, mentorship, and sport. 

Bavuma says some of the children he’s empowered are now either playing cricket at the highest level, or prospering academically and in professional environments...

As a national team captain, Bavuma takes Freedom Day very seriously. As a young kid growing up in Kwa Langa in Cape Town, he never thought certain things were possible, but through the efforts of those who have walked the path before, he’s now reaping the rewards of their work, and for this reason, this day means a lot to him...
