SASCOC boss wants Team SA to share Commonwealth Games medal responsibility

However, South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) president Barry Hendricks believes it is unfair to expect only those two sporting codes to carry the country's medal hopes.

He says every code has a role to play in making Team SA successful.

"We did well in cycling at the Olympic Games in Paris. We must look at the team as a whole.

Even in weightlifting we stand a chance, and in netball we also have a good opportunity to win medals.

We should focus on Team South Africa as a whole and not just two sporting codes," Hendricks told SABC Sport.

SASCOC has invested in both the swimming and athletics relay teams and believes they have a strong chance of reaching the podium.

However, Hendricks insists there is no pressure on the athletes despite the investment.

"We have supported the relay teams, and they stand a good chance of winning medals, but there is no pressure on them," he said.

At the Paris Olympic Games, South Africa won six medals, with swimming and athletics contributing two medals each, while cycling and rugby sevens added one medal each.

Now serving his second term as SASCOC president, Hendricks is confident that medals in Glasgow will come from a variety of sporting codes.

"We shouldn't rely on just two sporting codes. We are sending a competitive team. Although this is a reduced Commonwealth Games with only ten sporting codes, we believe several of our athletes can perform well," he said.

The first group of South African athletes is scheduled to depart for Scotland tomorrow, with competitors returning home shortly after completing their events.

Hendricks also believes the Commonwealth Games will provide an important benchmark as South Africa begins preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

SASCOC has also formally submitted bids to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host either the 2036 or 2040 Olympic Games.

"We have put up our hand to host either the 2036 or the 2040 Olympic Games, and we are confident in our bid. Hosting the Commonwealth Games is not our focus at the moment. Our priority is the Olympic Games bids," he added.
