Mchunu finished 25th in the women’s final of the 63kg event.
Speaking to SABC Sport, she says the journey to the Championships was not easy.
“I’ve been stressed out each and every day thinking about how am I going to get money, and the worst part of it was having specific dates to pay for certain things,” Mchunu said.
“That got me knocked off. I'll cry sometimes and tell myself that, at the end of the day, I am going to Germany. I have been my own motivator, counsellor, guide. I have been through a lot.”
The KZN athlete also works in the Hollywoodbets Super League as an assistant referee.
She has thanked her local municipality for sponsoring her trip and says now her focus will be on qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
“I don't have a sponsor. I have been assisted by local people ,who just donate for me randomly. Michelle Llloyd of Deynecke Engineering Company gave me a lot of money and also sponsored my gear and tracksuits," she shared.
"The King Cetshwayo District Municipality gave me money and also transported me to the airport. My little sister, Phindile Promise Mchunu, also gave me half of her stipend.
“The next level for me is building up for the Olympics. One has a long way to go, and different stages and competitions to qualify for in order to get up at the level of the Olympics.
"Next for me is building up for the African Championships that will take place in early-November this year. I'm on my easy, gentle and strategic preparation for the big stage.”
