Olympic hopeful Swart reflects on valuable Commonwealth Games lessons

Just three years after taking up weightlifting, Will Swart has reflected on a memorable Commonwealth Games debut despite narrowly missing out on a podium finish.

The South African impressed with a 148kg lift in the snatch but was unable to register a successful clean and jerk attempt, resulting in a DNF in the men's 88kg final.

Although disappointed with the outcome, Swart remains encouraged by the experience and says the competition provided valuable lessons as he continues his rapid rise in the sport, with qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games firmly in his sights.

"Being at the Commonwealth Games was an incredible experience, everything was run very well and done amazingly. With regards to my performance I was obviously extremely disappointed, but also incredibly proud of the hard work I put in to get there having only been in the sport for three years."

Swart added that he could not be too hard on himself having prepared to the best of his ability ahead of the final in Scotland.

Had Swart managed to successfully complete his 183kg clean and jerk to add to the 148kg snatch, that would have guaranteed him bronze.

He admits this was “heartbreaking”.

"The fact that I had a clean and jerk to secure a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games was very heartbreaking that I missed it, but I was very proud of myself for being in that position."

Swart says he is ready to jump straight into pushing himself in order to book a spot for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
