Mpumalanga Economic Regulator steps up effort to protect players from irresponsible gambling

Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) CEO Vusi Mtsweni has shared with SABC Sport how the organisation is working to protect players from excessive and irresponsible gambling.

The MER is responsible for regulating the gambling and liquor industries in Mpumalanga, ensuring compliance with legislation and alignment with national, provincial, and international policies and standards.

Speaking to the public broadcaster, Mtsweni emphasised the importance of safeguarding players as the gambling industry continues to grow.

“Well, the gambling industry is growing in South Africa so it’s very important for us as the regulator to work closely with operators in making sure that they follow the regulations,” Mtsweni said.

“It’s also important they know that they aren’t allowed to advertise to young people (under the age of 18), also taking measures that include age restrictions for their customers, identity verifications, and also encouraging their customers to write to the regulator if they struggle with gambling.”

With the gambling industry having reached a R1.5 Trillion turnover and over 60% of people reaching out to the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) for help with addiction, Mtsweni says it is essential for the regulator to stay ahead of industry trends.

“We can’t deny that sports betting is growing massively in the country which means we must continuously monitor industry trends and make sure the growth is monitored in the right manner,” he explained.

“It’s also very important to monitor online gambling and maintain the integrity of the industry by working closely with operators which include having regular meetings with betting companies.”
