LIV in SA the driving force behind Southern Guards revamp

General Manager of Southern Guards GC, Richard Glover says the number one objective when the team rebranded was to bring a LIV event to South Africa.

Glover was appointed by LIV in 2024 as one of five new team general managers. Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, at Steyn City, Glover says it is a proud moment to finally see the vision realised.

"I joined LIV Golf at the end of 2024 to take on the all South African team which used to be called Stinger, and now it's been rebranded to the Southern Guards GC. Our number one objective was to bring a LIV event to South Africa, because we realised as a team that if we are to be successful and really turn this into a business and a brand, we needed a South African event."

Glover details how the team balances global ambition with local impact.

"We're a truly South African team and that's where our focus is at the moment, establishing ourselves as a South African brand and as a team all South Africans can get behind. That's phase one.

"Phase two is looking at other opportunities outside of the borders of South Africa."

Glover commented on whether LIV South Africa is reminiscent of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and said it was an emotional moment to see Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel tee-off at the first tee.

"I was here for the World Cup and I'm not too sure if anything beats that, but I must say it was a very emotional moment for us as a team to see Louis and Charl tee off on the first tee today in front of a massive crowd."
