Maile admitted that he is still waiting for a full briefing after returning to the department on 1 April, when he replaced Matome Chiloane.
The race has been surrounded by uncertainty since SABC Sport first reported in January that runners had not been paid, and the situation remains unresolved months later.
"I don’t know the full details about the non-payment, but I do know there are serious problems in the marathon.
We have to take an interest and try to facilitate a solution. We don’t organise the Soweto Marathon and we don’t own the rights, but we understand the importance of the event.
That is why we will meet all the stakeholders, hear everyone’s side, and try to resolve the issues. It is time for us to step in and help," Maile told the national broadcaster.
With time running out, the future of this year’s race remains uncertain after Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) did not include the Soweto Marathon on its official calendar.
Maile believes the focus should not be on rushing to stage this year’s race, but rather on fixing the long-term problems to ensure the marathon returns stronger and more sustainable.
"I don’t think we should rush into hosting a marathon only to face the same problems again next year. We first need to understand the issues and make sure they never happen again. We want the Soweto Marathon to become a stable and respected brand that is not constantly interrupted."
"That is also why sponsors are hesitant. Companies do not want to invest in a brand that is not managed properly. We need a lasting solution, and that is why I will be meeting with all the role players involved," said Maile.
The founder of the Gauteng Marathon also ruled out bringing his own race back simply to fill the gap if the Soweto Marathon does not take place this year.
"Not necessarily. We already have many marathons taking place almost every weekend. It is not about the name of the race. For me, it is about promoting a healthy lifestyle and getting communities involved in running, rather than being obsessed with a particular event," he added.
Meanwhile, Central Gauteng Athletics issued a statement on Friday confirming that the runners have still not been paid.
However, the federation says it is working with various stakeholders to raise the necessary funds and remains committed to ensuring the athletes receive their outstanding prize money as soon as possible.
