Karabo More set for gruelling Women’s Month race calendar

South African rising star Karabo More is set to tackle a demanding series of 10km races during Women’s Month this August.

The newly-crowned national 5km champion will be competing in the Spar Women’s 10km Grand Prix in Tshwane on Saturday, before moving on to the Totalsports Women’s Race in Cape Town on 9 August, Johannesburg on 17 August, and the Absa Run Your City 10km in Tshwane on 24 August.

Speaking to SABC Sport, the 23-year-old said she’s approaching the month with confidence after her breakthrough win at the national championships, where she claimed her first national title in 16:27 at the Athletics South Africa Road Running Championships.

“The victory still feels unreal. It’s a reflection of my hard work and the journey I’ve been on, especially after a tough year,” said More.

She has posted impressive times across multiple distances this year, including 2:07.68 in the 800m, 4:10.40 in the 1 500m, and 15:51.84 in the 5 000m, while her 10km personal best currently stands at 33:22.

"This year has been amazing, and my coach and teammates have played a big role in keeping me focused and motivated,” said More, who trains under Olympic champions Caster Semenya.

"The August calendar looks intense and a bit overwhelming, but I’m ready to give my best. I’m especially looking forward to the Absa Run Your City 10km. My goal is to stay consistent and deliver strong performances in every race."

Karabo More has the advantage of being familiar with the challenging routes in Tshwane, having raced in both the Grand Prix and the Run Your City 10km events before, but she knows that familiarity alone doesn’t guarantee success.

"It’s all about showing up, giving it your all, and aiming for a PB. I’ll stick to the race plan and see how things turn out," she concluded.
