Karabo Mabilo set to unveil CGA election manifesto

Karabo Mabilo set to unveil CGA election manifesto

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) presidential candidate Karabo Mabilo is set to launch her election manifesto tomorrow, ahead of the federation’s much-anticipated elections later this month.

Mabilo, a former CGA deputy president, also served as acting president for 18 months following the suspension of then-president Stephen Khanyile.

Speaking to SABC Sport, the attorney by profession said she has been working behind the scenes to ensure that her manifesto reflects her vision for the province.

The CGA elections will take place on 24 January at Germiston Stadium, with a competitive field contesting the presidency.

Candidates include Khanyile, Thokozani Mazibuko, Brenda Marolen, Rio Matlhaku, Alain van Atcher, Seema Llale and Makgaba Manabile.

To safeguard the integrity of the process, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has been appointed to oversee the elections, which are expected to be conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Mabilo has urged affiliated clubs to place their trust in her leadership, saying she is committed to restoring the image of one of the country’s most influential athletics provinces.

“There are some exciting elements in the manifesto that will be revealed soon. I believe I did well during the 18 months that I served as acting president,” said Mabilo.

An active social runner who regularly participates in events across the country, Mabilo explained that she took time to enjoy the festive season before fully turning her focus to the election campaign.

CGA has been under administration since Athletics South Africa dissolved the board, appointing Trevor Fredericks as administrator.

Fredericks is expected to hand over to a newly elected board later this month, with Mabilo is hoping to lead the incoming structure.

“Our manifesto is about unity, rebuilding the province and, above all, putting the interests of athletes first. The details will be shared publicly in due course,” she added.

Meanwhile, Mazibuko, a former CGA board member, is also preparing to unveil his manifesto. Marolen has told the national broadcaster that her manifesto will be based on nine key focus areas, which will be announced in the coming days.

Khanyile, on the other hand, has opted to remain tight-lipped for now, indicating that he will only address the public once he is ready to outline his presidential plans.
