Karabo Mabilo launches her CGA election manifesto

Former Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) president Karabo Mabilo has officially launched her election manifesto, outlining a strong focus on constitutional reform, sponsorship and partnerships, financial accountability, performance management, and audit and risk oversight.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mabilo said her campaign for the presidency gained momentum after she took a short break to spend the festive season with her family. The much-anticipated CGA elections are scheduled to take place on 24 January at Germiston Stadium.

Mabilo previously served as CGA deputy president from 2022 to 2025 and stepped in as acting president for an 18-month period following the suspension of former president Stephen Khanyile. She now hopes to use that experience to secure a full term at the helm.

At the heart of her manifesto is a commitment to elevating the quality and impact of CGA programmes, while strengthening corporate governance across commissions, committees and the administrative office. She has also prioritised improving working relations with Athletics South Africa (ASA) and other provincial structures, as well as amplifying the role and effectiveness of the women’s committee, development committee and athletes’ commission.

“My manifesto sets out a vision for a forward-thinking Central Gauteng Athletics grounded in integrity, strong governance and accountable leadership,” said Mabilo. “CGA has experienced a period of uncertainty that affected trust, operational effectiveness and confidence among stakeholders, including potential investors and sponsors. Sustainable athletics success cannot exist in an unstable federation.”

A tax law specialist attorney by profession, Mabilo believes her skills and leadership background position her well to restore CGA’s image. As a social runner, she says she understands the needs of both elite and social athletes, as well as sponsors, to return the province to the forefront of South African athletics.

“The manifesto proposes a governance reset focused on accountability, financial discipline and ethical leadership, with the aim of moving CGA from survival mode to strategic, accountable growth,” she explained. “By rebuilding institutional credibility and strengthening trust, CGA can position itself as a reliable partner for sponsors and investors, unlock sustainable funding and create an athlete-centred environment where grassroots development, coaching and high performance can thrive.”

Confident in her comprehensive plan to turn CGA around, Mabilo said she is calm and ready ahead of election day, drawing on her experience from her previous stint leading the province.

“I am ready to lead the province, and I urge clubs to vote for me so that we can work together to move Central Gauteng Athletics forward. Vote for Karabo,” she concluded.
