Johannesburg Giants coach confident ahead of BAL

Founder and head coach of The Johannesburg Giants, Floresheim Ngwenya says his side is not in an easy group, but he fancies their chances of progressing ahead of Basketball Africa League (BAL).

The South Africa side are placed with Al Ahly Ly (Libya), Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Basketball Club (APR; Rwanda), Dar City (Tanzania), Nairobi City Thunder (Kenya) and Petro de Luanda (Angola) in the Kalahari Confence that will take place in Pretoria from March 27 to April 5.

The mentor shares his assessments on DAR City Basketball Club from Tanzania, who they face in their opening game on 27 March 2026.

“Lucky for us, we played DAR City in the last round of qualifiers in Nairobi, Kenya, in the Elite 16, and we beat them there. But I can rest assured they’ll reinforce, that’s for sure,” says Ngwenya

“But we understand how they play and we have a better understanding of how to actually play them. We’ve played well against them before, but obviously we plan well against a team that we played there.

“So we don’t really know yet as to who else they’ve signed in terms of imports coming from outside. But as far as their local players are concerned, we know all of them.”

The coach, who was named after the American shoe brand ‘Florsheim Shoes’ by his father, says the Giants have a packed roster, but there are key individuals he is excited to see on court.

“Yeah, so we have a packed roster, for lack of a better word, but, you know, I’m really excited about Joshua Ozabor. He just got back from NCAA Collegiate Basketball in the U.S, you know, played Division One. I’m also excited about Aviwe Mahlong, who just got back from the U.S having played Collegiate Basketball as well.”

“You know, there’s a couple of guys who I think are well-kept secrets, guys like Nino, you know, guys like Yanick [Kasilembo], those types of guys that are looking for an opportunity.”

Flosh says that there is enough talent at home and they are not going to be foreign-dominated as was the case with Cape Town Tigers and NBB in previous BAL editions.
