Jannik Sinner makes quick work of Indian Wells opener

Jannik Sinner made a commanding start to his campaign at the BNP Paribas Open, easing through his opening match in emphatic fashion on Friday in Indian Wells.

The Italian required just 64 minutes to defeat Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 6-1, 6-1 in the second round, having received a first-round bye.

Sinner was highly efficient on serve throughout the contest, winning 81 percent of the points on his first delivery and 75 percent on his second serve. He also showed resilience when required, saving the only break point he faced during the match.

The appearance marks Sinner's second event since his semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open earlier this season. Two weeks ago, the Italian's run at the tournament in Doha, Qatar ended in the quarterfinals.

"I feel mentally I'm in a good place," Sinner said.

"I'm calm, I'm relaxed. But I'm also very happy to compete. We did a lot of work. Many, many hours on court. Many hours in the gym. I'm trying to get a little bit stronger (physically). We did double sessions, not many days off at all."

Elsewhere at Indian Wells, fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti suffered an early exit after falling to Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 7-5, 6-1.

Musetti was playing his first match since sustaining a core muscle injury that forced him to retire from his Australian Open quarterfinal against Djokovic, despite leading that match by two sets.

Fucsovics proved the sharper player on the day, striking 19 winners compared to Musetti's 10. Musetti also struggled with consistency, committing 26 unforced errors to Fucsovics' 22.

The day's schedule also featured two all-American matchups. In one of them, eighth seed Ben Shelton battled past Reilly Opelka 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Opelka had an opportunity to seal the match when he attempted to serve for it at 5-3 in the second set, but Shelton broke back before eventually completing the comeback victory.
