Jannik Sinner ends Carlos Alcaraz streak to claim Wimbledon crown

Jannik Sinner defeated two-time defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the 2025 final to add Italy to the list of countries to produce a singles winner at the All England Club.

Following their historic five-set humdinger at the French Open final that was won by Alcaraz, Sinner turned the tables as he came back from a first-set loss to beat his great rival 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in just over three hours on Centre Court.

With Sinner's win, Italy became the 12th country with a Wimbledon men's singles champion as the 23-year-old went one better than his compatriot Matteo Berrettini, who lost the 2021 final against Novak Djokovic.

For Sinner, it is a fourth Grand Slam following his back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2024 and 2025 and his US Open trophy at Flushing Meadows last September.

Alcaraz started the match against the Italian as the favourite as he had won his last five matches against the world No 1 with Sinner's last win coming in October 2023 while the 22-year-old was also on a 24-match winning streak.

The Spaniard was also looking to win a fourth consecutive title as he had won the Italian Open, French Open and Queen's Club in recent months, but Sinner produced a masterclass in composure as he denied the five-time Grand Slam winner a 25th match win in a row.

For Sinner it is his first Grand Slam away from the hard courts after his successes at Melbourne Park and Flushing Meadows as he realised yet another dream.

âœIt is amazing to be in this position,❠he said during his post-match speech.

âœWe were talking before the match that we would never thought we would be in this position when I was young. This was only a dream, the dream of the dream because it was so far away from where I'm from. I'm just living my dream.â

The Italian added: âœI would like to thank my team and everyone who came here for this special day. It means so much. They keep pushing me to become a better tennis player, but also a better person. Thank you.â

Having won Wimbledon the last two years, Alcaraz was on a 20-match win streak, but Sinner handed him his first defeat at the grass-court Grand Slam since he lost in the fourth round in 2022 â- a match also won by Sinner.

Alcaraz was on an 18-match win streak on grass as he started the tournament with last year's Wimbledon title win, this year's Queen's Club title and his six wins at the 2025 Championships. But it is a case of 18 and out for that streak.

The Alcaraz streak against Sinner is now also over with the latter claiming his first win over the Spaniard since the China Open semi-final two years ago.

Alcaraz had won their encounters in the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Open and French Open last year while he turned the tables in Beijing as he won the final. The 22-year-old also won in this year's Italian Open and most recently the Roland Garros final.
