Jacques Kallis praises Fancourt as a golfing mecca

South African cricket legend Jacques Kallis has praised The Links at Fancourt, describing the George-based course as a golfing mecca ahead of inaugural Icons Cup.

The Icons Cup will tee off in just under two months, with two star-studded teams set to  compete in a 3-day team match play golf format played over 10 holes.

The tournament will bring together a plethora of sporting icons across various sporting codes who have taken up golf following their retirement from their respective sporting careers.

Kallis, who will represent Team South Africa, also revealed that he and former Proteas teammate Mark Boucher have shared a house at Fan Court since 2003.

"100% I have been fortunate enough to share a house with Mark Boucher since 2003, so I get to play in these courses fairly regularly in particular The Links as well. It certainly ranks up there as one of my favourite courses, it's always a privilege playing in this course. I love it. It's heaven, it's golfing Mecca, golfing heaven, so I'm looking forward to getting to The Links again,” Kallis said.

“I think it's a fantastic way to get young kids to come watch some average golfers hack it around the golf and see that it's fine, you can hit a few bad shots and have a laugh about it and just enjoy the game.

“Rather than watching professional guys that hit it in the middle and make all the pats, not everyone is like that, it will be nice for the kids to see that."

The 51-year-old says the lessons players have learned in their respective sporting codes, particularly in managing expectations and handling pressure will carry over into the tournament at Fan Court, which gets underway on December 11.

"It's something different, you know when you're playing Pro Ams and that's it, a certain way of doing things but I think this is very different,” he added.

“You are playing part of the team to get a point, you don't wanna be the person that plays badly and lets your team down so I think there's gonna be a lot of practising going on over the next few months because the guys won't wanna let the team down but you know also the lessons that you learnt in your sport as well you can take over onto the golf course. How do you manage those expectations and pressure and all that."
