Daniil Medvedev battles past Tommy Paul to reach Shanghai Masters semi-finals

Daniil Medvedev recovered from a second-set collapse to beat Tommy Paul and reach the Shanghai Masters semi-finals.

The fifth-seeded Russian overcame the American 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in just over two hours, earning his third semi-final appearance at the tournament and the 70th of his tour-level career.

Medvedev made the stronger start, saving all seven break points he faced in the opening set to take control. However, Paul responded emphatically in the second, breaking three times to level the match and force a decider.

The former world No 1 regrouped in the final set, improving his serve and putting sustained pressure on Paul's delivery. He struck 16 aces overall and capitalised on the American's declining first-serve percentage to secure the victory.

Medvedev also improved his head-to-head record against Paul to 5-1, continuing an impressive Asian swing during which he has won 11 of his 12 matches since arriving in the region four weeks ago.

The 30-year-old claimed his third title of the season in Hangzhou last month and is now the only former Shanghai champion left in the draw, having lifted the trophy in 2019.

Medvedev will face 20-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar in the semi-finals after the youngster came from behind to defeat Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Jodar became the youngest semi-finalist in Shanghai Masters history with the victory, setting up a first meeting with Medvedev.

"He has a great game," Medvedev said of his next opponent. "He hits very strong, so it is going to be fun to see it in real life, to get the feel.

"If I am playing well, I am tough to beat and that is what I am going to try to do."
