Caitlin Rooskrantz claims silver medal in Commonwealth Games prep

South African gymnast Caitlin Rooskrantz admits there are areas to fine-tune as the Commonwealth Games draw closer, following her second-place finish at the Koper World Challenge Cup over the weekend.

Rooskrantz claimed a silver medal on the uneven bars in Koper, Slovenia, marking her first podium finish at the event after previously reaching the finals in 2017 and 2024.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Rooskrantz also revealed she will compete as an all-rounder at the Commonwealth Games and not only the uneven bars, which has been her specialty.

"I think the biggest thing that I'll be working on from now until the Commonwealth Games will definitely be fixing up those problem areas on bar that we have seen from this competition," said Rooskrantz.

"I'm doing a lot more finer detail work on those problem areas, trying to get that as solid as possible – that will be specifically with bar.

"And then I am going to be competing all-round at the Commonwealth Games, so it's just to really get floor and volt back on par and exactly where I want it to be in these next couple of weeks.

"As much as I have big hopes and aspirations for bar at the Commonwealth Games, I do also have big goals as an all-rounder and I think that was also shown at the African Champs, where I competed as an all-rounder, so I'm hoping to solidify all those performances."

Reflecting on her final performance, Rooskrantz admitted there was a mishap at the beginning of her routine, which she managed to recover from for the remainder of the performance.

"My performance from the final of this World Challenge Cup, I think overall I'm quite happy with how it went – it did not start out the best, I had a bit of a mishap at the beginning of my routine, which is very unusual," she added.

"But I kept fighting throughout the routine and I was just determined to get through to the end and that's exactly what I did, and it ended up paying off so well.

"Because, besides the little mistake at the beginning, everything else was really good so I still managed to hit that 13-mark and secure my place on the podium, which was everything that I had hoped for coming into this World Cup."
