Benjamin Richardson is excited about the Grand Slam Track Miami invitation

Former South African 200m champion Benjamin Richardson sees the upcoming Grand Slam Track Miami invitation, set for Friday and Saturday in the USA, as a prime opportunity to improve his times.

Richardson will compete in both the 100m and 200m events, going head-to-head with some of the world’s top sprinters.

In an interview with SABC Sport before his flight on Tuesday, the tall sprinter expressed his excitement for the big competition, eager to face faster competitors who could push him to achieve a new personal best.

"I'm flying out to Miami on Tuesday. Hopefully, I can achieve something there and really make myself known to the world.

"Yesterday was my second 100m race of the year, and so I might not be race-ready, but I am fit. The more races I have, the better I become," asserted the powerful sprinter.

In the 100m and 200m events, the former national junior champion will line up against a world-class field that includes Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake and Oblique Seville, Canada’s Jerome Blake and Andre De Grasse, Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, and America’s Kenny Bednarek and Fred Kerley.

It’s a valuable opportunity for the young sprinter to earn prize money while testing himself against some of the world’s best.

"My agent was the one who called me to ask me if I would like to compete in the Grand Slam. I was immediately interested because it's a massive opportunity to face some of the best athletes in the world, which should prepare me for the World Championships," said Richardson.

The 20-year-old South African sprinter, who has Ghanaian heritage, has clocked an impressive 9.95 seconds and secured qualification for the World Senior Championships in Tokyo, Japan, later this year.

He hopes the high level of competition at the event will push him to achieve an even faster time.
