Anthony Moruthane overwhelmed by SA Sports Awards nomination

That dream has now become a reality, with Moruthane earning a nomination in the Sport Administrator of the Year category.

He will compete against Sonja Schulz of Cycling South Africa and Jonathan Leaf-Wright of the Central Gauteng Lions.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Moruthane said the nomination left him overwhelmed and struggling to find the right words to describe what the recognition means to him. 

He says it is a special and unexpected moment in his career.

Moruthane reflected on his remarkable journey in tennis administration, which began as a volunteer at TSA in 2011. 

"I think this reflects the work that has been done by Tennis South Africa, and I've been very fortunate enough to implement ideas and to work alongside an incredible group of people. I love embracing the challenges of this sport, it's been really fulfilling from my days driving PR on the media side to stepping into this role."

Appointed as TSA General Manager in January 2025, Moruthane believes that tennis in South Africa is moving in the right direction. 

He says the sport is showing encouraging signs of growth, with improved structures and performances helping to raise its profile across the country.

Despite the recognition, Moruthane admits that the role of leading a national sports federation comes with many challenges. 

The Limpopo-born administrator says balancing limited resources, growing participation, and meeting the demands of modern sport requires constant hard work and innovation.
