Speaking to SABC Sport, Fritz said Le Clos has earned his place in the team through his performances and remains capable of winning medals at major international competitions.

The Games are scheduled to take place from 23 July to 2 August.

Le Clos is among several experienced swimmers named in the squad, alongside athletes such as Corlene Corbett and Pieter Coetzé.

"No. You know the Commonwealth Games are serious games; it's about medals. Besides that, Chad Le Clos has qualified. Moreover, Chad is very good for our swimming team. He is a motivator; he is just a fantastic athlete. You must remember that he has made South Africa proud, and we love him in the team. He is still swimming very well ," said Fritz.

Fritz, who is serving his sixth term as SSA president, believes the 34-year-old still has plenty to offer the sport. He is confident that Le Clos can remain competitive at the highest level and even qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

He also highlighted the value Le Clos brings to the national team as one of South Africa’s most accomplished swimmers and a role model for younger athletes.

"Yes. You will see him at the World Short Course Championships in Beijing, China. He said to me, 'I am training very hard to perform exceptionally well.' I have a view that he will qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games. Whether he will medal is another thing, but I think he will qualify for 2028. He is a masterful athlete, and he is just on another level sometimes."

According to Fritz, Le Clos’ contribution goes beyond the swimming pool. He said the former Olympic champion will play an important mentorship role for the younger members of the squad.

Fritz added that Le Clos, together with retired Olympic champion Tatjana Smith, continues to inspire the next generation of South African swimmers through his experience and leadership.

Fritz is also encouraged by the overall progress of South African swimming and believes the sport is in a strong position heading into the Commonwealth Games.

With several swimmers producing impressive performances in recent competitions, he said the national team is well prepared and ready to compete when SASCOC officially unveils the final squad later this month.
