Representing the Boxer Running Club, the 28-year-old athlete marked his inaugural appearance on the global stage during the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, USA, in that event, Motlagale secured the 52nd position, crossing the finish line with a time of 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Undeterred by his initial showing, he emphasizes that this experience has been a valuable lesson, one that has contributed to his growth and understanding of international competitions.

“Preparations for the major upcoming event are progressing smoothly. My performance in the world championships was hampered by a plantar fasciitis injury last year.

I am determined to enhance my timing and achieve a better outcome in Europe.

The presence of renowned athletes who participated in the Olympic Games left me in awe. I felt a sense of overwhelm and lacked confidence.

During the initial 14 to 20 kilometers, my performance was erratic and I struggled to find my stride. However, these experiences have been instructive,” Motlagale shared with SABC Sport.

Under the guidance of his father, Adam, Motlagale has achieved a personal best time of 2:11:15 and is setting his sights on a remarkable 2:07 at the forthcoming world championships.

His qualification for the global marathon was achieved through his placement in the world ranking, securing a pot among the elite 100 athletes.

However, this year, he faced challenges defending his SA marathon championships title which he has claimed in 2022.

In March, he put up a good fight, finishing second and clocking a time of 2:17:06 at the local marathon championships held in Durban.

“I’m targeting a goal of achieving the Olympic qualifying time of 2:08:12, ensuring my spot at the Paris 2024 Games. Should I manage to clock in at 2:07 that would undoubtedly be a remarkable achievement for me.

Reflecting on recent events, I set a personal best of 29:32 at the Absa Run Your City event in Durban just three weeks ago.

Additionally, I participated in the Palaborwa half-marathon, completing it in 65:37. With these accomplishments, I confidently affirm my readiness for the upcoming world championships,” said Motlagale.
