Zakithi Nene optimistic ahead of the 4x400m mixed relay at the World Champs

Following his contribution to the 4x400m mixed relay team securing qualification for the World Relay Championships in the Bahamas, scheduled for 4-5 May, Zakithi Nene exudes confidence in their ability to clinch a podium finish.

During the Athletics South Africa (ASA) Continental Tour Challenger held at the University of Johannesburg, the relay team clocked a national record of 3:14:97, securing their berth at the prestigious global event.

Nene expressed contentment with their performance and underlined the importance of qualifying for the world relay championships.

"I think the choices that we have as a country to try to get the team, the next 4x4 team to go to Bahamas is much more important than just my single effort here today. So, a good team effort, a national record, qualify for World Relays, I think that's a good day you know," Nene said.

Even after participating in a demanding 400m race beforehand, Nene remained resolute in his commitment to aiding the team in claiming the top spot on the podium.

He courageously took on the relay's third leg, seamlessly passing the baton to Zeney Van der Walt, who gracefully brought the race to a triumphant conclusion.

"Like I said I had another 400 in my legs from the pre-program that I ran but I think I knew that today as a really strong athlete. The ladies really put in a good show you know. I just got the main objective done, now heading towards the relays we might just have to plan and see where we run," Nene added.

South Africa has faced challenges in relay events at the World Championships and Olympic Games, often experiencing disqualification due to improper baton exchanges.

Nevertheless, Nene sees promise in the mixed relay as an opportunity to secure a podium finish in the Bahamas.

"You looking at the mixed relay as well as the option to medal. So, I think now we've just got all the athletes buy-in towards mixed relay and a potential medal for the country. Hopefully, we can see that one through and start bringing in a bit more medals for Team South Africa."
