Trevor Fredericks – CGA elections to be free, fair and transparent

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) administrator Trevor Fredericks has issued a stern warning to candidates contesting the upcoming elections, saying there will be no room for underhand tactics.

The much-anticipated elections are scheduled to take place at Germiston Stadium on 24 January.

CGA was placed under administration by Athletics South Africa (ASA) in October, with Fredericks appointed by the national federation to oversee the day-to-day operations after the board was dissolved.

He told SABC Sport that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has been brought in to ensure the process is credible, adding that the elections will be conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner.

"It's important we have a free and fair process, and I spoke to the specific issue by saying that people must refrain from underhandedness and manipulating the voting process."

Fredericks further stressed that the entire election process has been clearly communicated to all affiliated clubs, leaving no room for confusion on what to expect or how voting will take place on the day.

A number of candidates are vying for the presidency, including Karabo Mabilo, Steven Khanyile, Thokozani Mazibuko, Brenda Marolen, Rio Matlhaku, Alain van Atcher, Seema Llale and Makgaba Manabile.

While acknowledging the challenges of his caretaker role, Fredericks admitted to the national broadcaster that he is excited about the upcoming elections, saying the position has not been an easy one.

"There is so much potential in the provinces, so I'm actually very excited for the elections, irrespective of who may be elected, I believe there is the potential to really grow."

Fredericks also cautioned that the incoming board will have no time to ease into office, warning that they will need to hit the ground running to stabilise the federation. He emphasised that the task ahead will require hard work and commitment, rather than comfort.
