Nicknamed “Mr Down Run” after winning all three of his Comrades titles on the downhill route, Dijana says he is feeling calm and confident as he prepares for a new challenge in his first Comrades Marathon representing Hollywood Athletics Club.
The experienced ultra-marathon star told SABC Sport that his preparations have gone well and that he is ready for whatever unfolds on race day.
"My preparation for this Comrades went well. I'm injury free and ready for Sunday, we'll see what happens, I'll go with the flow."
Despite being one of the favourites for the title, Dijana insists he is not feeling any pressure to win. The former security guard, who has built a successful business career alongside his running achievements, says both he and his club management share the same mindset — enjoy the race and let the result take care of itself.
He says there are no expectations weighing on his shoulders and that he simply wants to produce his best performance.
While he has mastered the Down Run, Dijana admits the Up Run remains a much tougher challenge for him. The North West-born runner says the uphill route demands a different approach.
He hopes this year could finally be the opportunity to conquer the Up Run and complete an important chapter in his Comrades journey.
"I'm a down run specialist you can put it that way, so the up run is very difficult for me," explained Dijana.
Dijana has also praised Hollywood Athletics Club for making him feel at home since joining the club from Nedbank Running Club in January.
He says the club has welcomed him warmly and provided excellent support, including helping with the financial demands that come with competing at the highest level.
