Poland rally to defeat Switzerland and secure maiden United Cup crown

Poland were crowned United Cup champions for the first time after edging Switzerland 2–1 in the final in Sydney on Sunday, recovering from an early setback in the opening singles.

Switzerland struck first when former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic overturned world number two Iga Swiatek 3-6 6-0 6-3 to extend her impressive United Cup singles record.

Poland responded through Hubert Hurkacz, who levelled the tie with a hard-fought 6-3 3-6 6-3 win over three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the men's singles.

The title was decided in the mixed doubles, where Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski continued their flawless run at the tournament, defeating Bencic and Jakub Paul 6-4 6-3 to seal the championship.

"Finally we have made it - third-time lucky... I mean, not lucky because we worked really hard," said Swiatek, reflecting on Poland losing the previous two finals to Germany and the United States.

"I want to thank our team because this year I felt like it was such a team effort. I really felt the support. Even though my singles performance wasn't perfect, you really got my spirits up and each of you believed to the end."

There were moments when Poland appeared headed for a third straight final defeat as Bencic claimed her ninth United Cup singles win to put Switzerland ahead in their first appearance in the final.

However, Hurkacz dragged Poland back into contention, continuing his strong return from a seven-month injury layoff by defeating 40-year-old Wawrinka, who is playing his final season on tour.

Kawa and Zielinski then delivered the decisive blow, building on the form that saw them overcome Coco Gauff and Christian Harrison in the semi-finals, as they secured their fifth consecutive win of the tournament to clinch a historic title for Poland.
