Pieter Coetze elated with three-medal haul at FISU Games

SA swimmer Pieter Coetze says to finish the FISU World University Games with a trio of medals around his neck is a memory that will live on forever.

The 21-year-old won two golds in the 100m backstroke and 50m backstroke respectively, while also adding silver in the men’s 100m freestyle in Berlin, Germany as evidence of his prowess in the water.

Speaking after his final individual event, the Olympian reflected on being the first athlete to get Team SA on the podium.

"I'm super happy to get the win because it was really close at the end. I'm over the moon to have finished with a win, and I'm excited to see what Team SA does for the rest of the competition," said the serial medal winner.

Coetze adds that the support in Berlin has contributed to his success at the FISU Games throughout the week.

"I'm grateful for the support I have received from my team and everyone back home. My poor roommate lost his voice after cheering for me."

Meanwhile, there’s a potential medal in swimming once again after both Olivia Nel and Michaela de Villers qualified for the women’s 50m backstroke final.

They were both elated by the possibility.

"Michaela and I just finished the 50m backstroke in positions one and two, and we are super super happy about it, and the race tomorrow."
