The Nedbank Running Club athlete heads into the People’s Race brimming with confidence after securing a bronze medal at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) 10km national championships in Mangaung.
Running in Central North West colours, Khonkhobe clocked 29:07 to finish third behind Chris Mhlanga and Musawenkosi Mnisi, who both crossed the line in 29:00.
Khonkhobe took on the shorter distance in the Free State as part of his speed preparations for the marathon, insisting the outing sharpened him for what lies ahead.
The self-proclaimed “Head of the Table” in South African road running says he is in the best shape of his career and determined to secure a marathon double after winning the City-2-City 50km ultramarathon in September.
His versatility remains one of his biggest strengths — from the 56km and 90km ultra-distances to half-marathons and standard marathons — a trait his manager Nick Bester praises often, describing him as an athlete “born to run.”
Speaking to SABC Sport, the 28-year-old made it clear that nothing will stop him from defending his title next week.
“I can run every distance and still enjoy it. I went to Mangaung to work on my speed because Soweto is my show — I own it. I am ready for the marathon, and the plan is to defend my title. I can confidently say I’m fit and ready for the big day,” he said.
Khonkhobe enters the race as the overwhelming favourite and admits the pressure fuels him rather than intimidates him.
“I love the Soweto Marathon, and I’ve done everything possible to win again. I am going to win because this is my show,” he declared.
His coach, Pio Mpolokeng, has described him as a special athlete whose talent and passion for running set him apart.
With R250 000 up for grabs for the champion, the stage is perfectly set for Khonkhobe to chase another memorable victory in the streets of Soweto.
