Naomi Osaka stuns Aryna Sabalenka to reach Wimbledon quarter-finals in straight-sets upset

Japan's Naomi Osaka delivered a performance for the ages as she knocked World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka out of Wimbledon and booked her place in the quarter-finals.

Osaka outplayed Sabalenka in all aspects to clinch a 6-2 7-6 (7-2) win over her fellow four-time Grand Slam champion on Centre Court.

Sabalenka hadn't exited a Grand Slam prior to the quarter-finals since 2022, but she had no answer for Osaka on the day, who looked in disbelief after clinching the win on her second match point to reach the last eight at SW19 for the first time in her career.

"It's been a long time since I had so much fun on the court," said Osaka. "To do it here means a lot."

The pair were meeting for the fourth time in the past three months, with Sabalenka having won each of their previous three encounters.

However, Osaka turned the tables on this occasion, producing an outstanding display to match Sabalenka's power from the baseline while moving superbly around the court to control the contest.

Osaka advances to a quarter-final clash against Czech 10th seed Karolina Muchova, while Sabalenka was left to admit the better player had won on the day.

"Obviously I'm not happy with the way I played, but yeah, she overpowered me. I felt like it was incredible level from her. I try my best. Well, unfortunately not this year," she said in her post-match press conference.

"I didn't play my best, and she played probably her best. Sometimes that happens."

Elsewhere, Coco Gauff overcame Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, sealing victory just two minutes before Wimbledon's 11pm curfew. The American celebrated by tapping her wrist after clinching match point.

Gauff will next face fourth seed Jessica Pegula, who defeated fellow American Iva Jovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals. Pegula and Gauff are regular doubles partners on the WTA Tour.
