Mirra Andreeva storms into French Open semifinals with emphatic win over Sorana Cirstea

Mirra Andreeva continued her impressive French Open campaign on Tuesday, brushing aside Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-3 in just 56 minutes to reach the Roland Garros semifinals for only the second time in her career.

The eighth-seeded Russian dominated from start to finish on Court Philippe-Chatrier, where play took place under the closed roof after rain arrived in Paris. The victory sends the 19-year-old into a semifinal against the winner of the all-Ukrainian quarterfinal between Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk.

Andreeva's latest display underlined her growing status as one of the leading contenders in the women's draw. She struck 18 winners, converted all six break points she created and forced 20 errors from Cirstea while committing only six herself.

"I knew that this match wouldn't be easy and I'd have to put 200 per cent of my focus to win," Andreeva said.

"I'm super happy I was able to do it and tried to play aggressive throughout the whole match."

The contest featured the largest age gap in a women's singles Grand Slam quarterfinal since Martina Navratilova faced Jennifer Capriati at Wimbledon in 1991, but there was little doubt about the outcome.

Cirstea, 36, was competing in only the second Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career and the first at Roland Garros since 2009. The Romanian, who is playing the final season of her career, struggled to cope with Andreeva's relentless baseline accuracy.

Andreeva raced through the opening set without dropping a game, surrendering just nine points and not facing a break point. Cirstea finally got on the scoreboard at the start of the second set and briefly stayed level after the pair exchanged breaks.

But Andreeva quickly reasserted control. After the score reached 3-3, she won the final three games, dropping only two points in the process to seal a comprehensive victory and improve to 2-0 in career meetings with Cirstea.

The win was Andreeva's 34th across all competitions this season, the most by any player on the women's tour in 2026, and her tour-leading 20th on clay.

She now stands one victory away from her first Grand Slam final. She holds a 1-1 record against Svitolina, losing their only meeting this season, while Kostyuk has beaten her in both of their encounters this year.
