Karolina Muchova saves match point against Coco Gauff to reach Wimbledon final

Karolina Muchova produced one of the biggest wins of her career on Thursday, saving a match point before defeating Coco Gauff in a dramatic three-set semi-final to book her place in her first Wimbledon final.

The Czech 10th seed kept her composure in a thrilling deciding tie-break to secure a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(10) victory after two hours and 35 minutes in scorching conditions on Centre Court.

Muchova will now face either fellow Czech Linda Noskova, the ninth seed, or Ukraine's 12th seed Marta Kostyuk in Saturday's final.

It will be the second Grand Slam final of Muchova's career after finishing runner-up at the French Open in 2023, and she is now just one victory away from winning her first major title.

"It sounds really nice to be in the final," Muchova said. "It was such a big fight. You are up and down, no time to think but it was very nerve-wracking."

The victory was another impressive chapter in Muchova's remarkable comeback from a series of serious injuries that threatened to end her career.

The 29-year-old has battled problems with both wrists, her abdomen, back, thigh, ankle and foot in recent years. She even revealed that doctors suggested in 2022 that retirement might be the best option, while wrist surgery kept her out for 10 months across 2023 and 2024.

Her Wimbledon run has been even more surprising given her previous struggles at the All England Club, where she had lost in the first round on each of her previous four appearances. Muchova has also spoken about managing a grass allergy with medication throughout the tournament.

Against Gauff, she made the stronger start by exposing the American's serving difficulties. Muchova broke serve twice in the opening set and finished it with a powerful ace as Gauff headed off court looking for answers.

Gauff, the seventh seed and two-time Grand Slam champion, responded superbly in the second set. After making 12 unforced errors in the opener, she settled her serve, played with greater aggression and broke for a 3-1 lead before comfortably forcing a deciding set.

The final set developed into a tense battle as both players saved break points and refused to give ground. Muchova also appeared to struggle with an abdominal problem but continued to fight.

The deciding tie-break produced the match's biggest moments. Muchova stretched full length to hit a spectacular volley winner that even Gauff applauded.

Drama followed when Muchova received a time violation at 8-8, and the warning appeared to affect her as she missed a forehand to hand Gauff a match point.

However, Gauff was unable to take her chance, hitting a drop shot into the net.

Muchova quickly regained her focus, earning a match point with a brilliant lob before slipping at the net as Gauff kept the contest alive. The Czech stayed calm, continued to attack and eventually sealed a memorable victory to reach her first Wimbledon final.
