Glenrose Xaba eyes historic clean sweep in Spar Grand Prix series

Glenrose Xaba has her eyes on history as she looks to complete a clean sweep in the Spar Women’s 10km Grand Prix series.

The 30-year-old has already secured her third overall Grand Prix crown with a race to spare, but she is determined to go all the way and become the first South African athlete to win all five legs in a single season.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Xaba said she is not easing up despite the overall title being wrapped up.

“When it comes to this weekend’s race, I want to stay consistent and run another fast time,” said Xaba.

“I am targeting a sub-33-minute finish even though we will be running at altitude. I want to do it for my supporters and the people who look up to me.

"Winning all the races would mean a lot, and I want to dedicate it to my support system.”

Xaba, who clocked her seventh sub-32-minute time of the season with 31:57 in Gqeberha, insisted on finishing the series strongly.

“This has been my best year, and I would like to end the series on a high note,” she added.

The Boxer Running Club star has been unstoppable this season, with victories in Cape Town, Durban, Tshwane, and Gqeberha — a run that also cemented her place in history as the first local black athlete to win three Grand Prix titles.

She will line up as the hot favourite at Marks Park in Emmarentia, where more than 15 000 runners are expected to fill the streets of Johannesburg on Sunday morning.

Adding to the excitement, four-time Comrades Marathon champion Gerda Steyn is among the star names specially invited to take part in the Johannesburg leg.
