Glenrose Xaba clinches consecutive victories in the Grand Prix series with another win in Durban.

South Africa’s road running star Glenrose Xaba delivered once again by clinching her second consecutive Spar Women’s 10km Grand Prix victory at Kings Park Stadium in Durban on Sunday morning.

Representing Boxer Running, she took the lead at the 4km mark and finished the race in a swift 31 minutes and 54 seconds.

The event drew a packed crowd of 12,000 runners under sunny and warm conditions in KwaZulu-Natal.

Ethiopia’s junior runner Diniya Abaraya secured second place with a time of 32:09, followed by her compatriot Salem Gebre in third at 32:25.

Xaba earned R30,000 in prize money for her win, marking her third straight 10km race victory, including the Absa Run Your City 10km in Cape Town back in May.

In a thrilling three-woman contest, Xaba surged ahead after the 6km mark, opening a commanding 50-metre lead that the Ethiopian athletes from the Nedbank Running Club couldn’t close.

The 30-year-old South African record holder in the marathon, half-marathon, and 10km events dedicated her victory to her mother, who recently celebrated her birthday.

Earlier this month, Xaba also impressed on the track, clocking 15:10: 42 with a personal best in the 5000m race in Paris, France.

“I feel very special and blessed to have won this race during the same month my mother celebrated her birthday,” Glenrose Xaba told SABC Sport.

“I missed her birthday on 15 June while I was travelling back from Paris, where I competed in the 5000m and 10,000m events, so this win means a lot to me. It’s even more special because Spar is celebrated its 35th anniversary, and this is my first-ever victory in the Durban 10km—after finishing second and third in previous years.”

This marks Xaba’s third consecutive 10km victory on South African soil this year, and she remains motivated heading into the next race in the series. "I’m still hungry for more,” she said.

I will continue working hard and won’t relax because others are chasing me. My next race is the Run Your City 10km in Durban on 13 July, and I hope to win it to boost my world ranking and qualify for the 10,000m at the World Championships in Tokyo later this year.”

With three races left in the series — Tshwane, Gqeberha, and Johannesburg — Glenrose Xaba is the frontrunner to claim the overall prize, which includes R200,000 in cash and a brand-new Hyundai vehicle
