Caster Semenya: I’m done fighting World Athletics

South African athletics legend Caster Semenya has shared with SABC Sport that she’s walking away from her long-running battle with World Athletics.

Semenya has had a decade-long legal battle with the world organisation.

However despite scoring a major victory at the European Court of Human Rights last year, she insists that the fight is no longer hers.

"Ok, I will start with the World Athletics issues, I don't think there's a battle. It's their own battles, it's not my battle. I think I've played my part as an athlete, I've played my part as an advocate for human rights. For me, that's not my fight, it's theirs as you know they continuously disrespect women,” Semenya said.

“So, I would say, I'm done with those battles. I have to focus on myself, I have to focus on maintaining myself and be the leader that I wanna be."

The 35-year-old was recently spotted at the Athletics South Africa national junior championships at Germiston Stadium not as an athlete, but as an Athletes’ Representative.

She says she’s now focused on developing young talent.

"You asked about being the athlete's rep, of course that's what we are here to do. Obviously we are here to guide athletes, we have to show them they have responsibility to build something and be better. So, I think those are the things that we need to come here and deal with athlete issues to see how we resolve them and how we better the provinces," she added.

Semenya shut down talk of jumping into leadership roles at South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee or Athletics South Africa.

Instead, she’s building her own empire — focusing on coaching, ambassadorial work, and growing her Masai Athletics Club.
