Carlos Alcaraz cruises into Vienna Open final, Alexander Zverev bows out

Carlos Alcaraz booked his place in the Vienna Open final while world number one Alexander Zverev crashed out in three sets on Saturday.

The indomitable Spaniard is yet to drop a set at the 2026 event. Alcaraz downed his fellow former world number one Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6(2) in a heavyweight semifinal clash.

The pair exchanged breaks of serve early in both sets, but in the first, Alcaraz found another breakthrough on return.

In the second set, Medvedev held firm to force a tie-break, but Alcaraz produced a barrage of powerful groundstrokes to close out the match in an entertaining 96 minutes.

"It's a great feeling, beating someone like Daniil on an indoor court, after the [run] he was having," said Alcaraz.

"A lot of wins in a row, a lot of confidence and I was able to beat him, so it is special. I've been working really hard in every aspect of my game, to try and be in good shape for this tournament and to try to give myself another chance to go far in a tournament.

"I'm really happy to have the chance to play another final, and my first one here in Vienna. I will try to make the most of the time to recover well physically and mentally for tomorrow. It's been a great week and I'm looking forward to it."

In the other semifinal, Alex de Minaur upset Zverev 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) to book a date with Alcaraz. After dropping the opening set to his Australian rival, Zverev rebounded with a dominant second set, but it was de Minaur who held firm in the closing stages to seal a triumph.

"Super proud, super proud with how I handled the situation," De Minaur said in his on-court interview.

"I was very calm, even though I threw in a couple doubles there. I thought, all in all, I played a very aggressive tie-break. I played on my terms. I was going to go out swinging and playing the right type of tennis, and that's what made the difference today."
