Several candidates are vying for the top position, including Karabo Mabilo, Steven Khanyile, Thokozani Mazibuko, Rio Matlhaku, Alain van Artcher, Seema Llale and Makgaba Manabile.
CGA administrator Trevor Fredericks has assured SABC Sport that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will oversee the process to ensure that the elections are free and fair at Germiston Stadium in the new year.
CGA was placed under administration after its board was dissolved by Athletics South Africa (ASA) in October, with Fredericks tasked with managing the day-to-day affairs of the province’s popular athletics body.
Marolen, who is preparing to launch her seven-point manifesto, has urged all candidates to avoid underhand tactics and intimidation, and to prioritise the interests of the sport. She stressed the importance of conducting a free, fair and transparent election.
“We are calling for professionalism and calmness in these elections. There is absolutely no need to attack each other personally. After all, we are colleagues and we will still need to work together after the elections,” said Marolen.
She also reflected on her previous suspension during her presidential bid at the 2022 CGA elections, noting that she has since been cleared and recognised as a member in good standing.
“My biggest wish is that these elections are free and fair, with no underhand tactics. I don’t care who wins or loses — for me there is no winner or loser. This is about the sport, the athletes and the future of athletics in the province,” she added.
Marolen emphasised that athletics must always come before individual ambitions. “The sport is bigger than all of us. At the end of the day, we have to work together to protect the interests of athletics in the province, whether we like it or not. We should campaign with dignity and not intimidate one another.”
She said her campaign is focused solely on strengthening CGA should she be elected. “My campaign is not about individuals but about promoting the interests of CGA. We must also hold each other accountable, regardless of who ends up on the board. That is very important to me.”
Marolen concluded by calling on all nominees to approach the campaign period with level-headedness and respect. “I urge all CGA candidates to campaign with integrity, commitment and respect for the values of fair play and sportsmanship. The focus must be on building strong clubs and creating a brighter future for our athletes. Together, we can achieve this goal. I also wish everyone good health in the upcoming new year.”
