Arthur Jantjies draws inspiration from Gerda Steyn

Nelson Mandela Marathon champion Arthur Jantjies says he is inspired by South African running star Gerda Steyn, whose success and consistency continue to motivate him to achieve more in road running.

Jantjies believes it is a privilege to run alongside Steyn, a seven-time Two Oceans Marathon champion and five-time Comrades Marathon winner.

The Kimberley-based runner enjoyed a breakthrough moment in April when he claimed his maiden Two Oceans Marathon title.

He still remembers the special moment, particularly sharing the spotlight with Steyn, who won the women’s race.

The two runners are expected to train together next year as they prepare to defend their respective Two Oceans Marathon titles.

However, Jantjies is not rushing to follow Steyn’s example by taking on both the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons in the same year.

He says he will leave that decision to his coach, John Hamlett, before considering a move to the Comrades Marathon.

“I would leave that one to my coach, John Hamlett. The plan is to do the Two Oceans and defend the title successfully, then see what happens after that.

“Running both the Comrades and Two Oceans in the same year in the men’s field is something else. I admire Steyn for running and winning both races,” he said with a smile.

Jantjies was also delighted to share the road with Steyn at the Absa Run Your City 10km race in Mangaung, where he had another opportunity to learn from one of the country’s leading distance runners.

“Gerda inspires me a lot, and I love running with her as part of my journey. I was so happy that we ran together in Mangaung.

“I love how she dominates the Two Oceans, and that inspires me to go for more titles and remain consistent in the race. I am learning a lot from her in terms of her mentality, consistency and hard work."
