Ann Ashworth transitions from runner to ultra-marathon official

Winning the Comrades Marathon is deemed a more formidable challenge than overseeing the operations facets of the race, according to former runner Ann Ashworth.

Having triumphed in the Ultimate Human Race in a time of 6 hours, 10 minutes, and 4 seconds in 2018, Ashworth recently assumed the position of race operations manager at the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA).

Despite her impressive athletics background, the 39-year-old is now acclimatising to her new responsibilities, replacing Rowyn James, who resigned in October.

When asked about the comparative difficulty, Ashworth expressed her perspective in an interview with SABC Sport, stating, “Trying to win the race comes with its challenges, and being an administrator is indeed challenging. However, I’d say it’s more challenging to emerge victorious in the race.

“Upon learning of James’ departure from the CMA, I proactively reached out to explore the possibility of assuming his role. I communicated my interest and availability, expressing a keen willingness to enter his position.

"Subsequently, I submitted my CV, and I am pleased to note that I secured the job."

Ashworth, a former proprietor of the Massmart Running Club, boasts extensive experience in sports with a career spanning numerous years, having dedicated 15-plus years to coaching and a decade to the management of athletes.

Holding the credentials of a qualified advocate, she pursued her studies at the University of London and reflects on her journey with great pride.

"I embarked on my running journey later in life, as my focus was primarily on education.  In South Africa, sustaining oneself in the sports industry proves challenging, with inadequate compensation for runners leading to a waning passion for the sport among many. Education took precedence for me,” she explained.

Elaborating on her current role within the CMA, Ashworth expressed, “My responsibilities encompass overseeing the race’s organisation and managing the administrative facets of the CMA.

"Our preparations for next year’s event are already underway, involving collaborations with various sponsors, elite runners, and meticulous planning of the race route.

"Additionally, we are actively engaging with the Drug-Free Sports Institute to heighten awareness among runners."

Ashworth remains committed to her training regimen and has set her sights on participating in the Two Oceans ultra-marathon scheduled for April next year.

Balancing her responsibilities in her new position, she aims to engage in additional smaller races to maintain her fitness levels.
