Kolisi is all too aware of the pressure of competing at international level and the pressure that the ever-proud South African supporters put on their heroes.

From one champion to another, the Springbok leader was full of admiration for Bavuma, who scored a gutsy 66 while batting with a hamstring strain in the final innings at Lord's.

"I'm proud of Temba, I'm really proud," he told a press conference during the Bok training camp in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

"He went through a tough period where he got a lot of criticism because he couldn't get runs. But he carried on fighting as he showed when his hamstring was sore. His career kind of went the same way in that he fought through it and did the best he could."

Kolisi added how impressed he was that the underdog team came together, blocked out all the criticism around the WTC format and delivered a performance for the ages. He also praised the mental toughness of Lungi Ngidi, the formerly banned Kagiso Rabada and the under-pressure Aiden Markram, who scored a century on Day 4.

"I know it's huge for the country," Kolisi continued.

"You saw the reactions of people in South Africa, the reaction of all of us as Africans. The one thing about South Africans, whenever we are fighting, people get behind them.

"We know it's been a tough journey for the Proteas. So to do something like this, and the manner that they did it in, with all the noise going on around them. That they'd only played a few tests. That all the other countries deserved to be there.

"It looked like they weren't going to do it in the first couple of days.

"The great thing about it is that it was a team effort. It wasn't just one person who stood up. I mean, Lungi struggled the first innings and he came back in the second. Kagiso was amazing. Aiden got zero in the first innings and he fought his way though [the second innings]. It shows a lot of who we are as South Africans."

The Proteas returned to a hero's welcome at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday, where Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie was on had to welcome them, and the Test mace, home.

With the tournament expanding to 12 sides, South Africa's campaign is set to test both their depth and maturity as they continue their rise in global women's cricket.

The Proteas, runners-up in 2024, will kick off their tournament on June 13 against Australia in Manchester, a rematch of the previous edition's final. It's a challenging opener, but one that could define South Africa's intent early in the group stage.

Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon champion and he will aim to equal his great rival Roger Federer's record of eight men's singles titles at the All England Club at this year's tournament, which will run from June 30 to July 13.

The 38-year-old's last triumph at Wimbledon came in 2022, when he defeated Nick Kyrgios in the championship match.

The legendary Serb was a runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in the last two editions of Wimbledon, losing an epic five-set final in 2023 before a straight-set defeat in 2024.

Djokovic is also chasing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, having won his most recent major at the 2023 US Open. The world No. 5 lost to Jannik Sinner in the French Open semi-finals in the last match he played.

During an episode of the Advantage Connors podcast, Connors was asked by his son, Brett, if Djokovic can win Wimbledon this year.

"Sure? Why not? His success on all the Grand Slam surfaces has been pretty amazing, let's face it," said the eight-time Grand Slam champion.

"Going in, I am sure he would have loved to have got to the final there and beaten Sinner and had that confidence flowing to his game.

"But I keep telling you, that getting older and playing against these young kids is no easy task, especially in these three out of five set matches.

"It's not the one that you win 6-4 in the fifth or 7-5 in the fourth set. It's the ones that follow that break you down and wear you out to where you get to the quarter-finals or the semi-finals and that is where you are supposed to be starting to play your best and getting on a roll, not fighting fatigue.

"It just happens to every athlete. You can't beat it. Because the athletes, when you get older, your competition is younger and when they come in and want to make their name like Sinner and Alcaraz, they want to use you, the older guy, as their stepping stone.

"A lot of these guys - to beat Novak and to be able to tell your kids that I beat Djokovic at Wimbledon, that's big!"

Niklas Sule: Would be 'stupid' to blame bad pitch for Dortmund's Fluminense defeat

The German defender was candid in his post-match assessment, criticising the playing surface but insisting it would be a "stupid excuse" for Dortmund's underwhelming display.

"We were very, very weak with the ball. We were aiming for much better. No excuses about the conditions, even though the pitch was pretty terrible.

"The ball didn't even bounce properly. But those are all such stupid excuses. It was simply far too little today. We have to blame ourselves for that to some extent.

"I still think everyone is up for this challenge. We simply have to bring more to the table for the second game and work on it.

The 31-year-old is currently in the USA with the Red Castle where they will take on Manchester City tonight in their Group G opener with fixtures against Juventus and Al Ain to follow later in the USA.

It’s not yet official whether the loan spell will be extended beyond June 30, but Lorch admits he almost had to start from scratch when he arrived in Casablanca.

"I think it's not easy coming from South Africa to Morocco, where in South Africa everyone knows me. When I came here, no one knew me, so I had to adjust. I think my teammates and my coaches welcomed me really well in the team and even the supporters, I'm fitting well now," Lorch said.

The Bafana Bafana international adds that having coach Rulani Mokwena at Wydad then also played a big role to help him settle.

Mokwena has since left the club.

"I've worked with coach Rulani even before Sundowns. I used to play for Pirates and he coached me at Pirates and then when he went to Sundowns, he fetched me from Pirates to Sundowns,” he added.

“So, I think for me, he's like a brother to me, father figure, friend because everytime when I have problems, I will go to him and then he will give me advice, you know. So, I think it made it easier for me to fit well in the team."

His parent club are also at the Club World Cup this month with Group F made up of Sundowns, Ulsan HD, Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund.

"I think both teams have the mentality to win. Both teams have good players. I would say Sundowns likes to play Tiki Taka, Wydad have that style but they are more aggressive. I think that's the difference, I think the difference is that here in Wydad we are aggressive," he added.

Rain had a lot to do with the proceedings last night as South Africa won by 166 via Duckworth-Lewis method, and the skipper says the synergy between them makes it a lot easier to play together and build a solid foundation upfront.

"Very important, if one doesn't go well, it gets spoken about a lot. I think we've put on a lot of good stands in the past couple of years batting together, it's really nice batting with her,” Wolvaardt said.

“I think we almost don't need to look where the ball is we just like know when to run and stuff like that and did really well encouraging each other to be nice and positive today. “So, yeah, it was nice to bat in the middle, I think we have quite a good record together so that change in mindset and good intent today was awesome."

Wolvaardt was also happy to be back among the runs for the team, and contribute with a bigger score towards victory.

This is her first half century since December last year against England in Potchefstroom.

"Very pleased, uhm had a tough couple of games but just a really conscious change of mindset today. I think I had a lot of discussions with the coaches about how to go about the innings and really take on that power play a bit more,” she added.

“So, try a lot more brave options today and it paid off which was really nice to see. Taz did the exact same, obviously really nice that she scored the 100 for us in a great position, so.

The back-rower last featured in the Japan Rugby League One in 2024 before he agreed a contract extension with New Zealand Rugby, which kept him tied to the governing body until the conclusion of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

However, written into that deal was another option to have a short-term stint abroad in 2026 and Savea has once again taken that up.

He will make the move to Kobe Steelers - the team he played for last year - before returning to Moana for the 2027 Super Rugby campaign.

"I have so much love for what we started with Moana this year so I'm looking forward to coming back in 2027," Savea said.

"It's hard to leave, even though it's only for one season, but I'll be supporting the team from afar and will stay involved behind the scenes. This year at Moana Pasifika was the happiest I've been in my career.

"On the other hand, Japan is a special place and I love the culture and the people. It's exciting to return to a club that has given me an opportunity to have beautiful experiences on and off the field."

Moana Pasifika head coach Fa'alogo Tana Umaga added: "Ardie obviously goes with our blessing.

"These sabbaticals are part of the modern game and we have been preparing for this for some time. We will continue to build the momentum of our movement in 2026 and work hard to grow our game so that we will be even better when he gets back to us in 2027."

While Savea has exercised a clause to take up an offer overseas, it will not affect his All Blacks career given that the Japanese season finishes well before the mid-year internationals.

Just like Jordie Barrett, who has just returned after six months with Leinster, and his brother Beauden, who has enjoyed stints at Suntory Sungoliath and Toyota Verblitz in 2021 and 2024 respectively, he will not miss any Test action.

Damian McKenzie is another to have used the sabbatical option - in 2022 - while Rieko Ioane will follow in Barrett's footsteps later this year after agreeing a short-term deal with Leinster.

Sharks boss John Plumtree reflects on frustrating but improved season

The Durban side finished the pool stages in third place, hosted a quarter-final at Hollywoodbets Kings Park where they beat Munster and contested their first-ever semi-final in the competition, losing to the Bulls.

A near-faultless home campaign underlined how much of a fortress the Bok-laden squad created at Hollywoodbets Kings Park, making it almost impossible for visiting sides to win in Durban.

Defeating the three previous champions - the Stormers, Munster and Glasgow Warriors - in consecutive games was also a noteworthy achievement that proved they can fight.

Injuries didn't help their campaign. In February, some 19 players were sidelined. But nonetheless, they earned 13 victories out of their 18 pool matches.

"It was a tough season and I've learned a lot in my second year in the United Rugby Champion," Plumtree told the Sharks' website.

"Last year, I didn't know anything about the URC as a coach, I had a new coaching staff, we had players exiting the team and then we went about strengthening the squad. We brought some good players in and we finished at this point, so yes, this has been a better season. But we have to work out how we can do better in the Champions Cup, especially coming off the back of a massive Springbok campaign.

"There has been a lot of publicity about how poor the South African teams were in this competition, we have to work out how we can be better. The players really want to compete in that tournament, they want to be on the big stage, but we have to work out how we can do it.

"We had 18, 19 injuries at one stage, there was a bit of a crisis and we worked our way through and got to this point. Not having Grant Williams or Eben Etzebeth for the semi-final, two of our best players, was probably tough for the boys. Particularly after the November international season.

"Then there were the Champions Cup games, then we had our Boks back but they were tired, so competing with players who had played 14, 15 internationals is a real challenge for some players."

Plumtree admitted that one of the biggest challenges was having a large group of Springboks and navigating them through a busy URC and Champions Cup season.

"So it's about navigating that period with the rest of the team when you don't have those players available and then when you do get everyone back, it's where you're sitting on the log, how you can progress towards qualifying for quarters, semis and finals in both competitions, " he added.

"The key for us it to make sure that we've got the depth in the squad to be able to do well without them. I think we showed that this year.

"It's going to be a continual challenge for us to keep strengthening the squad. I think we've done really well this year when you think about some of the wins we've had with this team, when we weren't full-strength by any means and still picked up victories.

"Coaching the Sharks side isn't for the faint-hearted. It keeps me awake at night!"

Bolton Wanderers confirm friendly encounter with Orlando Pirates in Marbella

The former Cape Town City centre back finally got a break in a high stakes fixture when The Brazilians got their FIFA Club World Cup campaign underway against Ulsan HD in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday.

A goal from striker Iqraam Rayners gave Sundowns the much-needed three points to help them set the tone and go top of Group F, which also includes Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense.

Cupido helped the side keep a clean sheet, but he admits no one is guaranteed to play regularly under coach Miguel Cardoso.

"It's not like a walk in the park at Sundowns, you need to work hard, you need to be ready, you need to be ready when they call you. I think I was ready when he [Miguel Cardoso] called me,” Cupido said.

“For me, I feel like it's been tough but I think God's timing is always perfect. So, I think today I took it with both hands and I felt proud of myself and also I think I have to give back to people that trusted in me.

“I want to thank each and everyone, my wife as well, she's been very supportive. It's been tough not playing and today I feel like I made a lot of people proud and I'm grateful for the opportunity."

The understanding between Cupido and Grant Kekana was crucial in keeping Ulsan attackers at bay at the Inter&Co Stadium.

Cupido says he has formed a strong bond with every player in that position.

"We've been working together with me and Grant, it hasn't been everyday that me and Grant work together but I feel like we understand each other. We are similar in terms of play, we read the game as well,” he added.

“So, I think it's just a partnership that works and not only with Grant, I have partnerships with Mothobi [Mvala], with Mosa [Lebusa], I've been around and I've played with everyone of them. I feel like I can work with anyone."

Iqraam Rayners fires Sundowns to Club World Cup victory

Iqraam Rayners scored the only goal of the game at the Inter & Co Stadium in the 36th minute and was subsequently named Man of the Match for his performance that could have seen the player grab a hat-trick.

When the game finally started, over an hour after the scheduled kick-off as a result of the weather in Florida, it was the South African's who found themselves on top.

The Brazilians dominated the early possession stakes, but without creating any realy clear-cut chance.

Rayners was lively in the wide areas and gave Sundowns the lead in the 31st minute but was correctly ruled to have been in an offside position.

He then had the ball in the back of the net again, but this time was called up for handball.

But a superb pass forward from Lucas Ribeiro just minutes later was slotted home by the Bafana Bafana striker from close range past Ulsan keeper Hyeon-woo Jo to secure an important three points.

Ulsan were much improved after the break and were using their pace to good effect as they looked to break forward and find an equaliser, and almost came close, only for Keano Cupido to make a spectacular last-gasp goal-line clearance.

But ultimately there was little for Sundowns to worry about as they claimed a strong victory leading into their next game against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

The result also saw Downs go top of Group F as a result of Dortmund's draw with Fluminense earlier on the same day.

Miguel Cardoso reacts to Africa’s first FIFA Club World Cup victory

The victory meant Sundowns were the first African team at the tournament to win a game with Al Ahly, Esperance de Tunis and Wydad Casablanca yet to do so.

Cardoso praised the players for following his instructions even in the sweltering heat of Orlando, Florida where the game was suspended for an hour due to inclement weather early on.

“It’s not easy to achieve victories, it was a long way until this moment. I think today we released a lot of energy, in the right way, before, during and after but we live with the right emotions,” Cardoso said.

“The team found the right place to start a match, we prepared it tactically and strategically very well and then we found the commitment between everybody, that was important to really play according to the level of preparation we had.

“So, I think it was clear we made a very wonderful first half, it was important that we keep the pace and not go away from the game plan so that we could score the second goal.

“Obviously as time goes by, having a margin of 1-0 in the score and normally there's an intention to keep the result, so the last 50 minutes we didn't play them as much as we would like but the way we created chances.

“Obviously we are very, very happy for the first African victory on the tournament and mostly I'm very happy with the joy that these players give to their families and to the country and to the club."

The Portuguese mentor revealed how they took advantage of the delay.

"So first question regarding the delay of the game, it had good things, bad things, it gave us the opportunity to sit with the team and discuss better the line up of the tournament that became a little bit surprising because usually they build up with a free player, having the full back lower then they defend with the back four.

“But today they were playing with the back five so we had time to make the proper corrections and settle down on the game and adjust on the plan. Most of all what was important was to release a bit of emotions because of the atmosphere in the stadium so we were more acquainted and re-energised for the beginning of the game."

Winning is a habit: Carlos Alcaraz reaches 14-match winning streak at Queen's Club

It was not all straightforward, with lucky loser Walton holding two set points in set two, though Alcaraz did enough to seal a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory at the ATP 500 event.

Alcaraz's win was his first since his stunning Roland Garros triumph, and the Spaniard has now won 14 straight matches amid a scintillating run of form.

That ties the 22-year-old's two previous best streaks, and he has the opportunity to break his own record over the next few days.

Alcaraz's first 14-match win streak came in 2022, the year in which he broke through to win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

His win streak came earlier in the year on clay, winning two big titles on home soil.

After losing in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters, Alcaraz won five straight matches on his way to a first Barcelona Open title, beating Pablo Carreno Busta in the final.

That was followed by a further five match wins at the Madrid Open, with wins over Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev on his way to the title.

The Spaniard extended his winning run to 14 after reaching the French Open quarter-final, where his streak was snapped by Zverev.

Just over a year from his 2022 streak, Alcaraz matched it with another 14-match win streak across the summer of 2023.

After a French Open semi-final defeat to Djokovic, the Spaniard won five matches at Queen's to win the first grass-court title of his career, beating Alex de Minaur in the final.

That was followed by a stunning run to the title at Wimbledon, with the Spaniard downing Djokovic in a thrilling five-set final to triumph at the tournament for the first time.

Alcaraz returned to action at the Canadian Open and won two more matches to bring his streak to 14, before a quarter-final loss to Tommy Paul.

Alcaraz has now matched his two previous 14-match win streaks, and has the chance to set a new personal record at Queen's this week.

The Spaniard was beaten in the Barcelona Open final in April, but returned to action at the Italian Open and won six matches on his way to a first title in Rome, beating Jannik Sinner in the final.

That was followed by a successful defence of his French Open title, winning seven straight matches at Roland Garros, including his thrilling victory over Sinner in the championship match.

Victory over Walton at Queen's on Monday was his 14th in a row, putting him just one victory away from a new personal best.

Alcaraz will face Jaume Munar in the second round at the ATP 500 event.

Tazmin Brits ton leads Proteas Women to series win in West Indies

A brilliant performance with the bat and ruthless accuracy with the ball helped the Proteas Women secure a 2-1 series victory over the hosts.

Winning the toss for the series decider, West Indies Women captain Haley Matthews put the visitors into bat first at the overcast Cave Hill. But the South African openers were in a dominant mood. Britz and captain Laura Wolvaardt took the West Indian attack apart from the very first over.

The world number one missed out on a maiden Roland Garros title as she fell 7-6(5), 2-6, 4-6 to Gauff in the championship match at the Paris Grand Slam.

Sabalenka hit 70 unforced errors - the highest tally committed by a player in any match at this year's French Open women's singles event.

In her press conference, Sabalenka gave a scathing assessment of her own performance and claimed that Iga Swiatek - who she defeated in the semi-finals - would have beaten Gauff.

"It was really, honestly, the worst tennis I've played in the last, I don't know, in the last I don't know how many months," the Belarusian said.

"Conditions were terrible, and she simply was better in these conditions than me. I think it was the worst final I ever played.

"I don't know, I think Iga (Swiatek) - if Iga would win me another day, I think she would go out today and she would get the win."

Sabalenka, who is competing at this week's Berlin Open, admitted in an interview with Eurosport Germany that she regrets her statements after the French Open final.

"But what I also want to say is that I wrote to Coco afterward - not immediately, but recently. I wanted to apologise and make sure she knew she absolutely deserved to win the tournament and that I respect her. I never intended to attack her.

"I was super emotional and not very smart at that press conference. I'm not necessarily grateful for what I did. It took me a while to go back and think about it, to approach it with open eyes, and to understand.

"I realised a lot about myself. Why did I lose so many finals? I kept getting so emotional. So I learned a lot.

"Above all, one thing: I'm the one who always treats my opponents with great respect - whether I win or lose. Without that respect, I wouldn't be where I am today. So it was a tough but very valuable lesson for me."

The three-time major champion also looked ahead to Wimbledon, where she will aim to win her first title.

"We all have the same goal: to win the tournament," Sabalenka asserted. "I've built a lot of self-confidence over the years, but at the same time, I've realised: It has nothing to do with self-confidence.

"It's about how willing you are to go out on the court and compete, even when things aren't going so well. It's about how willing you are to go out there and fight for what you want."

"It's been a great experience with the national team, all of the players and coaches have been very helpful and welcoming. Hopefully, I can get many more call-ups in the future.

"It was never a difficult decision to choose which nation to represent," said the powerful young center-half.

Okon was just 19 years-old when he first received a national team preliminary call-up from head coach Hugo Broos, with the Belgian mentor monitoring players who featured in this tournament.

Okon is also strongly rumoured to be leaving his club when his contract expires this month, with the big three in the country and some clubs in the Scandinavian region watching closely.

But speaking to SABC Sport during the tournament, he was coy on the matter.

"I've just been focused on the tournament for now, but once I get home, I'll focus on everything outside of the pitch."

Mphakathi, who made history in 2024 as the first local male winner of the 42.2km race in over a decade, appealed to the Soweto Marathon Trust to go beyond the proposed R250,000 prize and introduce additional incentives to encourage South African runners.

Speaking to SABC Sport, he emphasized the need for extra rewards to motivate local talent to aim for victory.

"I've been running this race for so many years, so for me if the organisers can just be fair and celebrate the local runners, then I'll be happy. It's a race that invites all the runners from around the world, including the locals," said the former winner of the famous race.

The former City-to-City 50km ultra-marathon champion admits that winning the People’s Race has been a tough challenge since he first began competing in the event back in 2013.

"It's a difficult to race to run, but you have to simply believe in your abilities and what you've been doing in training.

African football stands to greatly benefit from FIFA Club World Cup - John Obi Mikel

Intsika celebrates Shelmith Muriukis historic Comrades Marathon milestone.

Muriuki claimed third place in the gruelling 89km down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban’s People’s Park, clocking a time of 6 hours, 7 minutes, and 56 seconds—behind winner Gerda Steyn (5:51:19) and second-placed Russian Alexandra Morozova (5:55:56).

In recognition of her groundbreaking achievement, Muriuki received R315,000 from the Comrades Marathon Association.

Her club, Intsika, further honoured her inspiring performance by awarding her a cheque of R212,000 at the Sunday night celebration.

Until now, no black woman had ever finished in the top three of the iconic race, making Muriuki’s podium finish a historic first.

The City-to-City 50km ultra-marathon champion from Pretoria to Johannesburg now holds the distinction of being the first black woman to earn a top-three finish in the Ultimate Human Race.

The 41-year-old is a shy athlete who prefers to do the talking on the road; however, the spotlight was on her in a celebratory dinner.

Speaking with SABC Sport, she said the honour will serve as a motivation to aim for bigger things in life.

“I feel wow, I have achieved things before, but never appreciated before, so I feel good.

The appreciation gives me motivation to keep on pushing, and I feel good, and by God’s grace, I am looking forward to more big achievements,” she said.

Shelmith Muriuki had never competed in a race longer than 56km before taking on the Comrades Marathon.

Her previous longest distance was the Two Oceans Marathon in April, where she finished second behind Gerda Steyn in 3 hours, 37 minutes, and 51 seconds. No Kenyan athlete has accomplished what she did at Comrades, as the country is traditionally known for its dominance in standard 42.2km marathons rather than ultra-distance events.

“The number of kilometres I ran in training each week gave me the confidence to go beyond 58km,” she said.

“I believe many black runners will now feel inspired and believe it’s possible to reach the podium too. In Kenya, we’re used to the marathon distance, but I wanted to break that barrier and step into the ultra-marathon world. I hope this opens the door for more African athletes to follow.”

Muriuki believes she has what it takes to win the Comrades Marathon one day. She explained that her goal this year was not to win, but rather to gain experience and keep up with Gerda Steyn.

Yes, I believe I can win the Comrades in the future. This time, I just wanted to understand the race and focus on chasing Gerda without overextending myself.

“I’ve learned so much from watching her over the years. The key now is to run at least three-quarters of the race alongside her. It’s not about who wins, but I’m excited to compete with her again,” she said.

“I actually think this could work in the team's favour psychologically. Knowing this is Jermaine’s last dance at WAFCON could push the squad to give that extra 10% to make sure she signs off on a high by defending the title.

“Of course, Thembi will be a massive miss. However, I'm sure the technical team would adjust the formation or find players who can bring something different to that role, even if it’s not their natural position. The winning squad in 2022 played without Thembi for the majority of the tournament due to her being injured, so I believe we have depth to cover that position,” added Van Wyk.

The 38-year-old mentor further adds that she is still not convinced that the recent Banyana Banyana WAFCON preparation friendlies were good enough for people to witness a solid synergy between the players due to many rotations taking place.

“To be honest, I’m not convinced the friendlies have been ideal prep. There were too many rotations and experiments, which tells me the coaches are still trying to figure out their best XI or tactical identity.

“It’s risky this close to a tournament because you need clarity, the players need to trust the system and know their roles instinctively.

“Right now, that understanding still feels like it needs more time to gel. The big question is whether they’ll click in time,’’ she pondered.

KZNA president Steve Mkasi expects a legal challenge to his presidency.

The weekend’s election stirred controversy as Mkasi secured his second term by defeating former president Sello Mokoena with 36 votes to 24.

Mandla Mngomezulu and Chris White each received 17 votes, while Romeo Hulane garnered just one.

The voting began at 4 pm after several clubs walked out of the Annual General Meeting.

Only 121 clubs met the credential submission deadline, with over 46 failing to do so. In total, 95 clubs cast their votes, while others exited, prompting Mkasi to prepare for a possible legal dispute.

"I am humbled by the athletes and the trust shown in me by the relevant clubs and the other stakeholders.

"There doesn't appear to be any issue between the elected and unelected officials, apart from this one member who seems to be taking legal counsel from a rogue lawyer who seeks to cripple athletics in the province," explained the newly elected KZNA president.

Mkasi, who recently failed in his bid for the Athletics South Africa vice-presidency post, likened the KZNA elections to a horror movie.

"129 clubs rejected the motion to suspend the elections, so effectively, this was a strategy that backfired on a few individuals because they slept on the job. Had it been well planned, then they might've pulled off a beautiful coup," said Mkasi.

The organiser of the Durban International Marathon alleges that a group of clubs arrived at the elections with a clear agenda to cause disruption and prevent his re-election.

Despite their efforts, he says he managed to withstand the chaos and came out on the other side.

Mkasi, a lawyer by profession, told SABC Sport that he’s growing weary of being taken to court whenever his rivals don’t get their way.

While he’s no stranger to the courtroom, he says he’s tired of constantly having to resolve KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) disputes through legal battles.

Mkasi was not seen as the frontrunner in the controversial elections, and he described his unexpected victory as a bittersweet moment.

"There's no sweet victory when it comes to elections because you aren't contesting for prizes, it is a contest for leadership and responsibility.

"We had so many people voting that it diluted the vote, because I won the election with a tally of 36 votes out of a total of 95 votes, but it is a victory nonetheless."

Speaking on a podcast with Croatian football manager and former player Slaven Bilic, Djokovic spoke about his scheduling strategy and argued many players fail to prioritise the majors.

"For most of your career, when you're young, every tournament counts," Djokovic explained.

"Many say that the Grand Slams are the most important. But in reality, they don't live and train according to their schedule to be at their best for the Grand Slams, to be as fresh as possible for these events. They don't.

"Why? Maybe they don't believe in themselves enough, that they can go far in a Grand Slam tournament. Not everyone is cut out to compete at the top, and that's normal. But there are ways.

"Federer helped me a lot in that regard, not directly but indirectly. I observed how he planned his schedule. He helped me understand how to manage my form, when to take a break, even if I didn't want to.

"I also made mistakes. I didn't take a break when I should have, but most of the time, I made the right decisions."

The former world No 1 also spoke about the topic in an ESPN interview with John McEnroe in 2023.

"He (Federer) was one of the first players to really take the scheduling, preparation to a different level," Djokovic said.

"I was inspired by that and I was making notes with my team and I was taking a lot from that scheduling. And observing him and his team and how he has gone about it. So thanks Roger."

"But it was for them to be seen through a tournament like this, your COSAFA and your CHAN, that's where you always say Coach Broos will be able to identify one or two players to say, 'These are the ones I'll take to the real Bafana Bafana first team.'"

The front row club is an elite group. They prefer to steer clear of the flashy stuff and ply their trade in the dark rooms of the rucks and scrums. However, the club has been integral to the Boks' success since the dawn of time and there's no sign of that changing.

But Father Time remains undefeated. South Africa's front row stocks are getting on in age, something Bok boss Rassie Erasmus is all too aware of.

Stalwarts Steven Kitshoff, Frans Malherbe and Trevor Nyakane are currently out of the game. Kitshoff has retired due to injury, Malherbe (34) is nursing back issues and won't play in 2025 and Nyakane (36) is recovering from Achilles tendon surgery.

The fit front rowers in Erasmus' squad include Vincent Koch (35) and Bongi Mbonambi (34). If injury-free and in form, the duo should make the 2027 Rugby World Cup squad.

This season - two years out from the RWC - looks to be the perfect time to test new depth in the front row.

Speaking to the press, Erasmus indicated that Bulls behemoth Wilco Louw (30), the in-form Thomas du Toit (30) and the uncapped Neethling Fouche (32) will likely be tested this season.

"Frans is unlikely to play this season again, Trevor definitely not," confirmed the double World Cup-winning coach.

"Neethling is not a boy anymore, around 30 [32], which is a lekker age for a tighthead prop.

"Thomas du Toit is doing well with Bath. He is one of the top players there. Wilco is doing well.

"We are not going to change our game. We want to retain that forward power. There will be new faces in the front row this year."

Other props in the 45-man squad are Lions cult hero Asenathi Ntlabakanye (26), Marnus van der Merwe, Boan Venter (both 28) and the established Ox Nche (29).

Interms of hookers, Malcolm Marx is 30, while Jan-Hendrik Wessels - who can also fill in at loosehead prop - is just 24.

Fans saw the 2024 Boks mix experience and youth to great effect and this season is shaping up to be quite similar.

Springbok Women coaches reflect on Rugby Africa Women's Cup title

The Bok Women will return home victorious after wins over Uganda, Kenya and Madagascar, resulting in another continental title and trophy for the South Africans.

According to Springbok Women assistant coach Franzel September, the planning stages for this tournament was one thing, but the execution thereof was another and they are pleased that the young team delivered on several objectives planned.

"We came here with a clear view of what we wanted out of the tournament," said September. "It was part of our Rugby World Cup preparations, but we also wanted the players to express themselves out there.

"We decided to bring a number of uncapped players here, but there was never any doubt about their talent and ability. They showed in the provincial competition that they can mix it with our current Springboks, and they did not disappoint.

"One of the players just came to thank the coaches with tears in her eyes for getting the opportunity to showcase her talent on the international stage. We gave them the opportunity, and they used it."

September said the moving parts come together nicely: "I am also happy that we could integrate some of our sevens players into our system, they did well, while we also had eight players in the squad that played in the previous Rugby World Cup, and they needed match time in their legs as well. It was a successful trip for the programme."

Anathi Qolo, who captained the team to Madagascar, also praised the new players and said the fact that they won all three matches gave them confidence and a clear idea of what is needed in the green and gold.

"This was not an easy competition, make no mistake, the other teams tested us in many aspects of our play, and we had to work really hard as a team to achieve the desired results," said Qolo.

Reflecting on the 61-17 victory over Madagascar on Sunday, Qolo said: "We executed today's game plan well. We knew they would want to go wide all the time, so we had a plan to bring them back to our pack and it worked well.

"Overall, it was a success. We came to win, and we leave undefeated, so it was a successful mission."

The team will return to South Africa on Monday.

"More than the guys leaving, the guys that were suspended [played a huge role] – we had to change the entire backline, we played a different formation, and that's more due to the guys who were suspended," said Peral.

"We've got the left-back who's gone, Lorenzo suspended, the holding midfielder – so that changes your entire defence, but still at home you want to be better than this and get three points.

"But there were some challenge there with the changes, some new guys coming in, so more about the guys that were suspended than the guys that have left."

The reason for the Cape outfit's Betway Premiership struggles was once again evident as they failed to find the back of the net, but Peral takes comfort in their progress in defence.

"[City have struggled with scoring] goals, but you could also say throughout the season we conceded too much – so maybe that has improved a little bit, even with a back three as opposed to what we've been playing, a back four," he acknowledged.

Alcaraz's fifth Grand Slam title came as he saved three match points and won a match that was hailed as one of the greatest of all-time, with the 22-year-old who pulled off a magical Roland Garros win now revealing he is 'in shock' as he reflects on his achievements.

Speaking as he prepares to return to action on grass courts in the HSBC Championships at London's Queen's Club, Alcaraz was in upbeat mood as he admits he has been looking at clips of his win against Sinner during his time away in Ibiza with his friends, celebrating the win over the last few days.

"I have seen a lot of videos from that match, that moment from match point down," he said.

"I still watch it sometimes and can't believe I came back from that moment. Sometimes it is difficult to realise that I am in this position, that I won Roland Garros. I still watch the videos and am still in shock sometimes."

Alcaraz was asked if he had a favourite win from his five Grand Slams and he admitted his first in 2022 at the US Open will always been important to him.

"The first one is always there. It's always special. It's gonna be always in your heart," he said.

"And this one, the second one, a lot of people told me that it was the best final they have ever seen."

There has been some debate over Alcaraz's decision to take some time away from tennis ahead of his campaign at the Queen's Club, but he is following a path he took a year ago after his first French Open win.

His coach Juan Carlos Ferrero and members of his team were not happy with his decision to walk away from the game after his 2024 Roland Garros success, but he is convinced it is the right decision.,

"I went to Ibiza again," added Alcaraz. "It was fun, but honestly, I was there more mentally than physically. I had fun, just three nights, three days, and I think that was more than enough.

"The craziest thing was probably staying out really late. I danced a bit, but nothing more than what a normal person would do.

"It's kind of the middle of the season. After the clay season, which is very intense, I think it's the perfect time to get away.

"My friends go every year, so I go too. It doesn't matter where. The point is to switch off mentally, recharge physically and come back ready for the grass season. After such a great but intense few weeks, having time to disconnect and have fun is really important for me."

World No. 7 and second seed Fritz saw off the challenge of top seed and home favourite Zverev in Stuttgart, beating him 6-3, 7-6(0) to lift the title.

It is the first title of 2025 for the American, who has struggled at times with an abdominal injury across the opening months of the season.

Victory also provides an impressive response to what proved to be a challenging clay swing, culminating in an opening-round exit at the French Open.

"I'm really happy," said Fritz, who has won four of his nine ATP titles on grass.

"I've said it a couple of times this week, after a not-so-great clay season, to come here and start the grass season perfectly, I'm super happy with how I played and super happy to get the title, and do it here.

"I don't know how much time I'm going to have to celebrate as I have doubles tomorrow, in London at Queen's. I've got to get over there."

Triumph for the American extends his head-to-head lead over Zverev to 8-5, having now won the last five meetings between the two.

Aiden Markram believes South Africa's victory in the ICC World Test Championship Final has finally laid to rest the long-standing "chokers" tag - and hopes the Proteas' triumph can inspire a new generation to prioritise Test cricket.

Markram was named Player of the Match for his pivotal 136 at Lord's, an innings that guided South Africa to a six-wicket win over Australia and their first ICC title since the 1998 Champions Trophy. His knock will be remembered as one of the defining innings in South African cricket history, coming on the grandest stage and in pursuit of a challenging target.

Having fallen just six runs shy of the finish line, Markram watched from the balcony as the Proteas completed one of their most iconic victories - and one that may shift the narrative around the team's past near-misses.

"I thought a lot about the T20 World Cup final last year and how helpless I felt after getting out," said Markram, who captained South Africa in that loss. "That gave me motivation to stay in the fight. It was all about getting the job done this time.

"This is as big and as tough as it gets. All the questions that have followed us for years - they've now been answered. It would be great to not hear the word 'chokers' again."

Both teams started this tie well, although it took until the 24th minute for the first real chance as Ime Okon's header came crashing back off the crossbar.

The Sable Antelopes were not to be overrun and held their own for the remainder of the first period, before scoring a timely goal just two minutes from half time through a Depu header from a well-struck set-piece.

Okon came agonisingly close to an equaliser at the start of the second half, but somehow contrived to drag his shot wide of the target.

Angola though were putting pressure on South Africa and were full value for their second goal when Depu stole in from close range.

Boitumelo Radiopane was denied by Dominic with 68 minutes played but it was Angola who were to end the tie the stronger of the two teams, as Milson fired home a superb free-kick from the edge of the area.

Bok Women crowned Queens of Africa for a fourth time

The victory was their third victory of the tournament, handing them the continental title for a fourth time.

The South Africans scored nine tries against the host nation and they will leave Madagascar with many positives as the Rugby World Cup in England moves into view.

Their tries had a bit of everything, with the hard running of Aphiwe Ngwevu and the elusive finishing from Patience Mokone earning them two apiece, while Byrhandre Dolf not only created many attacking opportunities, but also scored a brace. Mary Zulu converted all five first-half tries for a 35-0 scoreline at the break.

Faith Tshauke opened the scoring the third minute. South Africa attacked well to the left and the right, with several eager ball carriers all gaining ground. When it was moved back down the left, the flanker found open space and scored. Zulu converted to put her side 7-0 up.

Madagascar only knows one style of play and that is to make the ball move along the hands. They handled well with a strong wind in their faces, but never really made any ground as the Bok Women's defence kept them pinned in their half. A few 'going nowhere slowly attacks' forced the home side to kick and handed possession back to South Africa, who made the most of it 10 minutes in.

A strong scrum by South Africa and good play with Mokone coming off the blind side wing saw her dotting down. Zulu converted for a 14-0 lead. A jinking run by Dolf was ruined with a forward pass and another handling error spoiled a potential try for South Africa, but they remained fully in control.

Madagascar kept plugging away though and had two good moments where they breached the SA line, but generally they were too predictable to outfox the defence.

Dolf finally scored following some good interplay by the backs after some strong driving play by the pack. Zulu converted for a 21-0 lead 23 minutes in before Mokone got her second with a delightful in and out that left her opponent stranded. The winger ran around to give Zulu a better angle and the successful conversion made it 28-0 after as many minutes.

Zulu then lost the ball over the line with the Bok Women starting to chase try glory instead of sticking to their structures. They were camped in the Maki's 22 for at least five minutes but could not get through as they became too individualistic.

Credit to the team, who self-corrected and returned to their set piece structure and they were rewarded when Dolf was worked into space on the blind side after a number of good attacking rucks. Zulu converted and they were up 35-0 at the break.

The second half started well for the champions. Ngwevu broke through a number of tackles to score as she came off an angled run to extend the lead, with Zulu again on target for a 42-0 lead.

The Bok Women clearly tried to bring some structure back into their play in the second half, and it was a much more measured approach that yielded results. Unam Tose scored 10 minutes into the half following a good lineout drive by the pack which gave the scrumhalf space to dart around for a try. Zulu converted for a 49-0 lead.

Madagascar finally scored after 52 minutes, and it as well deserved. VÃƒ©ronique Eluriche Rasoanekena (centre) rounded a tight defensive set-up by South Africa and after a successful conversion, the Stade Makis faithful were starting to smile.

They had more to celebrate soon as the home side scored their second try without reply, again from some good flowing play and the SA defence not coming around the corner quickly enough and with 20 minutes left, the crowd finally came to life.

Nomawethu Mabenge (replacement wing) scored soon after she came onto the field to hand the momentum back to South Africa. A good turnover at a ruck by replacement prop Anuschka Ekron resulted in a 15th Test try for Mabenge and a 54-12 scoreline with 15 minutes to play.

The visiting bench did bring good energy, and the Bok Women had the best of the play in the last quarter of the match. Mokone was called back for what would have been her third, due to a forward pass, but not so for Ngwevu, who again took the shortest route to the line. Chuma Qawe converted for a 61-12 scoreline and a minute to play.

Madagascar had the last say with a late try, which also resulted in a yellow card to Leigh Fortuin for a dangerous tackle.

Bok Women progressed to the finals, after two dominant wins against Uganda and Kenya at Stade Makis in Antananarivo.

Speaking SABC Sport, September says this afternoon’s final is an opportunity to prove that they want to remain the best team on the continent.

“We came to Africa, important for us, we need to win, we need to defend our title successfully. It’s gonna be a big task however we’re in the final huddle but important for us, we’ve got our systems, we’ve got our processes, we need to go through that but the assignment hasn’t changed,” September said.

“It’s the same Africa Cup, we wanna be the best team in Africa and we’ve got an opportunity to prove that by doing what we do best.”

September shares what he is expecting from Madagascar in the finals, stating that it’s a team that can manage to keep the ball alive and usually thrives when playing at home.

“They play from wherever they want to play from. They make use of the width of the field but we’re ready for that.

Despite a quiet first half from the hosts - and from Messi himself - Inter mounted a strong second-half response, narrowly missing out on a late winner after Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy tipped Messi's curling effort onto the crossbar in stoppage time.

Al Ahly dominated the opening 45 minutes, creating multiple scoring opportunities but were repeatedly denied by veteran Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. The 39-year-old produced a standout performance, highlighted by a crucial penalty save in the 43rd minute after Trezeguet was brought down in the box by Telasco Segovia.

Trezeguet's low effort to the left was met by a full-stretch Ustari, who kept Inter Miami in the contest heading into the break.

"It was a tough first half. We lost some balls in dangerous areas," Inter manager Javier Mascherano told DAZN. "But in the second half, we improved and created chances. We could have won the game."

Djokovic, 38, conceded after his French Open semi-final defeat to Jannik Sinner that he could have made his last appearance at Roland Garros, bidding what was perceived by some as a farewell to the crowd after the match.

With leading rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both calling time on their careers in recent years, many have wondered if the Serbian will be following suit sooner rather than later.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion has not won a major title since the 2023 US Open, with Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz sweeping the last six Grand Slams between them.

However, despite a dip in major results in recent months, Djokovic did achieve one of the greatest successes of his career at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last summer.

Making his fifth appearance at the Olympics, the Serbian finally captured the gold medal that had eluded him for so long, beating title favourite Alcaraz in the final.

An Olympic gold medal was the one big title missing from Djokovic's collection, with the Serbian having won every Grand Slam tournament, the ATP Finals, and every Masters event on multiple occasions.

He was also part of the Serbian team that lifted the Davis Cup title back in 2010, with triumph coming 14 years before his success in Paris.

Andy Murray is the only player, male or female, to successfully defend an Olympic singles title, and Djokovic would be 41 by the time of the LA Games in 2028.

However, in an interview with former footballer Slaven Bilic, the former world No. 1 revealed that a sixth Olympic campaign was the only thing in his "vision" as things stand.

"The only thing that at this moment, professionally speaking, I have in my vision at this point," said Djokovic.

"And it's interesting when we talk about these achievements and the Olympics that stand out and redemption, the only thing that I have in my head, which gives me motivation, is the Olympics of 2028 in Los Angeles.

"And playing for the national team and Grand Slams. But not even the Grand Slams, not as much as the Olympics."

Tennis action at the LA 2028 Games will take place at the Tennis Center in Carson, currently a USTA high-performance training base.

All players will face a tight turnaround from Wimbledon should they compete, with the Games set to take place from July 14-30, directly after the conclusion of action at the All England Club.

Should Djokovic compete, it would be his sixth Olympic campaign, and he would mark 20 years since his debut at Beijing 2008, where he won a singles bronze medal.

The Serbian has not played since his semi-final exit to world No. 1 Sinner at Roland Garros, and will return to action at this year's Championships at the All England Club.

Djokovic is a seven-time Wimbledon champion and has reached at least the final every year the tournament has been held since 2018.

While many clubs in Europe have allowed their players to go on holiday after a long and gruelling season, those involved in the FIFA Club World Cup - such as PSG - have been in training for the past couple of weeks to be as sharp as possible for the marquee event.

"We are preparing to play in the Club World Cup, so I think the players are happy. The players are happy with what we have done so far. Now we need to keep going, improving, but I like what I'm seeing in training," Enrique told PSG TV.

"We begin this competition against a European side that we know very well having already played them in the league phase of the Champions League this season. It will be a very difficult match because they have a lot of quality. It's a new competition that, I think, has a big future and could become a reference. We want to win our matches and progress towards the final."

PSG have been drawn in Group B and will take on LaLiga's Atletico Madrid, Brazilian club Botafogo and the Seattle Sounders from the MLS looking to earn a spot in the playoff rounds.

Jannik Sinner admits to sleepless nights in the wake of French Open loss

Sinner will be in action at the Halle Open this coming week, with the Italian looking to defend his title after winning his first grass court title at the tournament in 2024.

He will return to court just over a week after his stunning defeat in the Roland Garros final, where he lost to Alcaraz despite leading by two sets to love and holding three championship points.

The 23-year-old was looking to win his third consecutive major title and held his championship points in the fourth set, only to fall 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(2) in the longest-ever French Open final.

Speaking ahead of his Halle Open campaign, Sinner revealed that he felt it was a positive to return to court, and that he had been relying on family support to deal with the loss.

"I don't know how it will look in the future," said Sinner, in quotes reported by the ATP Tour.

"I think that it is not the most important thing, but I nevertheless try to forget the negative things and see what I can do here.

"I think that for me to play another tournament is positive, because every match is a new beginning, and I must be mentally ready to give my all on the court. Therefore, it is great I can be here in Halle.

"But yes, I had already a few sleepless nights, but I think every day it gets better. My family stand behind me, and my friends.

"That is the most important thing for me. Tennis is important in my life, but nevertheless are family and friends more important. Nonetheless, I think often about the match."

Sinner's return to action comes just over two weeks ahead of Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the year, which begins on June 30.

The Italian triumphed at the ATP 500 event in Halle twelve months ago thanks to victory over Hubert Hurkacz in the final, and has had solid success on grass across his career.

He has already reached three straight quarter-finals at Wimbledon, with his best showing being a run to the semi-final back in 2023.

"The first practice session was OK," added Sinner.

Known as the "Dream Team" in running circles, Nedbank has long dominated both the men's and women’s events but is now facing stronger competition and losing ground in major races like the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons.

Bester believes that clubs should focus on developing talent rather than poaching established stars.

“We don’t buy athletes—some clubs do, and I believe that’s damaging to the sport,” Nick Bester told SABC Sport.

“For the past 25 years, since our days with Harmony Gold Mines, we’ve focused on developing our own runners. If they become top athletes and get picked up by other clubs, that’s fine. If they’re not loyal, we let them go.

But there are clubs in South Africa that don’t develop athletes at all—they just buy them.

"I won’t mention names, but we all know who they are. On the other hand, Boxer Running Club, Rhyn Swanepoel and Comrades Marathon coach John Hamlett are a great example of doing it right. Like us, they develop their own talent.

We invest in proper coaching structures, with development coaches guiding athletes from school level all the way to the elite stage,” Bester explained.

Bester says they invest years of effort developing athletes from school level to the elite stage, only to see them poached by other clubs once they become successful. “They win races, gain recognition, and sometimes get bought by other clubs.

In some cases, it’s not entirely negative because it allows the athletes to earn more money.

But I don’t support the practice of buying runners. Still, there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

We don’t buy ready-made athletes — we build them ourselves. For us, money is not a shortcut. We believe in developing our own talent,” he explained.

As Kyle Verreyne hit the winning run, Bavuma cut a picture of catharsis in the dressing room, and says it was in that moment that he took in what they’d just done.

He says he realised how important it was that he did not give up even when he’s had to endure harsh hardships in the past.

“Yeah, I think at that moment I kind of thought of the experiences I’ve had in the last couple of years, it hasn’t been easy. It’s not easy being captain of South Africa and all the sacrifices, all the disappointment at that moment really feels worth it, you know,” he added.

“When you’re going through it all, giving up is always an option, it’s always there, it’s always at the back of your mind but something kind of builds you on. I think for me, it was that moment there to be recognised more than just a black African cricketer but to be seen as someone who’s done something that the country has wanted.

Venter earned his first Springbok call-up on Sunday following the completion of the team's first week of training in Johannesburg.

With props Gerhard Steenekamp and Ntuthuko Mchunu amongst six players released from the initial 55-man squad due to injuries, Erasmus drafted in Venter - a member of the Junior Springbok training group in 2017 - as the only new addition to his squad.

The other injured players released from the squad are Lukhanyo Am (centre), Pieter-Steph du Toit (utility forward), Cameron Hanekom, and Juarno Augustus (both No 8s), while another five players - Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf), Jordan Hendrikse (flyhalf), Quan Horn (fullback), Renzo du Plessis (flanker), and Ntokozo Makhaza (utility back) - have also been released to their unions.

"We got the 40 minutes the Leinster supporters were waiting for the whole season," said White.

"It's just a different league altogether, and that's why Leinster supporters are probably so disappointed. Because they were waiting for that performance the whole year, and we just happened to get the 40 minutes that they were waiting for the whole year. We couldn't get our hands on the ball."

White congratulated his fellow World Cup-winning coach Jacques Nienaber on Leinster's relentless defence, which forced the Bulls into many errors.

"Credit to Jacques and the defence," he added.

"We were a little bit one-off instead of running with numbers, people around the ball, but that's what happens when you're under the pump against a good team. The Nelspruit native carded an even par 70 around the difficult Oakmont Country Club on Saturday, leaving him 1 over for the tournament. Lawrence was one under heading into the final hole, but a bogey set him back. The South African finished solo fourth at the 2024 Open Championship, his best finish in a major championship.

Another notable South African is Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who signed for a one over 71 to move him to four over par for the major, tied for 11th with world number one Scottie Scheffler and a host of others.

Meanwhile, Burns held a one-shot advantage at the halfway stage and although he surrendered the outright lead to Spaun early in round three, he finished the day back on top after shooting a 69 that contained three birdies and two bogeys.

The 2023 Ryder Cup player sits at four under par, one shot ahead of 2013 Masters Champion Scott and first-round leader Spaun in a tie for second.

Norway's Viktor Hovland was the only other player under par at one under.

Heavy rain overnight and throughout the morning had made the brutal Oakmont Country Club course slightly more playable, but it still presented its challenges.

Burns slipped from the summit early on as he first watched playing partner Spaun make a rare birdie at the opening hole before bogeying the second to slip to two under.

But a stunning approach at the fifth set up a close-range birdie, which pulled Burns alongside Spaun at the top once more.

Seven straight pars followed for Burns before he made his next birdie from seven feet at the par-three 13th, having bravely gone right at the pin off the tee.

That took Burns back to the top of the leaderboard and he managed to stay there courtesy of an impressive par save on the 14th.

A bogey on the 16th dropped him into a tie for the lead but he got the shot back on the 17th following a delightful approach and safely parred the last to keep his nose in front after Spaun's closing bogey.

"I think as a kid growing up, you dream about winning Major Championships and that's why we practise so hard and work so hard," said the 28-year-old.

"All these guys in this field, I think would agree that to have the opportunity to win a Major is special. I'm definitely really excited for tomorrow. To have a chance to win on Father's Day would be really cool."

Scott recovered from his opening bogey with a birdie on the fourth before catching fire after the turn.

The 44-year-old Australian made back-to-back gains on the 13th and 14th - almost spinning in his approach at the latter for an eagle - before adding another birdie from 14 feet on the 17th to sign for a 67.

Scott, playing in his 96th consecutive Major this week, said: "Putting ourselves in these positions doesn't just happen by fluke. It's not easy to do it. I really haven't been in this kind of position for five or six years, or feeling like I'm that player. But that's what I'm always working towards. It's not that easy to figure it all out.

"But if I were to come away with it tomorrow, it would be a hell of a round of golf and an exclamation point on my career."

Spaun started well, becoming the only player to birdie the first hole on Saturday before bouncing back from a bogey on the third by birdieing the fourth.

Having shared the lead at the turn, he joined Burns in moving to four under with a birdie on the 17th but bogeyed the last to sit one shot off the lead.

He said: "One loose shot you can really make a big number pretty easily. So you're just trying to stay in the moment, stay in the present, play the shot that it's requiring and commit to every shot that you have, and that's kind of all you can do. I try to just stay in my own lane."

Bavuma and his charges sealed their first ICC title in 27 years after completing a five-wicket victory against Australia at Lord's on Saturday.

The skipper recognised the efforts his team and coaching staff have put in over the last two years, but knows there is always room for improvement.

Bavuma told reporters: "We hope this is the start of something, there could be more trophies. We have created history but we would like to emulate, if not do better than what Graeme (Smith) and his team did.

"They set the standard and I don't think anyone has reached that yet. I'd like us to be in a position where we can go to Pakistan and India, have victories there and do a lot more.

"We have had a lot of success in this cycle, which we don't look past. But from a longevity point of view, to really get the respect out there as a Test team, we'd like to see where we are in the next two years."

The Proteas started day four on 213-2, chasing a target of 282, but but Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs fell relatively quickly to give the Aussies some hope.

Aiden Markram however played a majestic innings of 136 before being dismissed with just five runs required for victory to leave David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne to take the Proteas over the line.

As the moment of victory drew closer and heartbreak of previous ICC tournaments were banished, Bavuma admitted to flashbacks of his place in the team being questioned and the burden of being a black African cricket captain in South Africa.

He added: "It was quite tense, even when we got it to 10 runs (needed) we knew anything can happen. When he (Verreynne) scored the runs, I hid my head in my hands, just trying to embrace and acknowledge what we've just done.

"I thought of the experiences I've had in the last couple of years. It hasn't been easy, it's not easy being captain of South Africa.

"All the sacrifice, disappointment, at that moment it really feels worth it.

"When you are going through it all, giving up is always an option in the back of your mind but something wills you on. For me, it's that moment there.

"(I want) to be recognised as more than just a black African cricketer, and to be seen as someone who has done something the country has wanted.

"I will walk around with my chest out and hope it continues to inspire our country."

The pain of all the near-misses at ICC tournaments - the comic of 1992, the trauma of 1999, the rain of 2003, the heartbreak of 2015 and the capitulation of 2024 - were all banished on a cool morning at the Home of Cricket.

Requiring a further 69 runs to achieve a 282-run target, captain Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram resumed in the morning with the total on 213-2 needing to calm what would have no doubt been a nervous dressing room and South African fans that packed the famous venue.

Those nerves would been amplified when Bavuma nicked Pat Cummins in the second over of the day to be out for 66 and then Mitchell Starc (8) bowled Tristan Stubbs to leave the Proteas on 241-4.

Markram and David Bedingham then calmed some nerves, taking the total to 276 before Markram was well-caught at mid-wicket for a magnificent 136.

The opener would have wanted to be there at the end, but it was rather fitting that he walked off the hollowed ground to a standing ovation that the 30-year-old richly deserved.

The innings will go down as one of the best ever played by a Proteas player in any format, and an argument could be made that it is the best innings ever by a South African.

Bedingham (21 not out) was joined at the crease by his good friend Kyle Verreynne (4 not out) and it was the wicketkeeper-batter who hit winning runs as the two Capetonians embraced.

The victory would be crowning moment for captain Temba Bavuma and head coach Shukri Conrad in what is their first WTC cycle together.

In an interview with SABC Sport, the four-time Olympian shared that she plans to take a short break before gearing up for the People’s Race, scheduled for the first weekend of November in Nasrec.

"I’m taking time off to rest and build up strength for the Soweto Marathon, which is my favourite race," she told SABC Sport.

"I’m praying to be fully fit and in top form like I was in my first Comrades. Soweto is my race, every time I line up there, I aim to win. If I can stay injury-free, I believe I have a strong shot at claiming a fifth title.”

Wife of nine-time South African 400m hurdles champion LJ van Zyl, she completed her first Olympic marathon in Paris last year after injury setbacks forced her to miss the previous three editions.

That milestone boosted her confidence and helped her conquer her maiden Comrades Marathon, she says.

“My husband and boys have been incredibly supportive, and everything I do is for them. I’ve developed a new sense of belief in myself.

With Aiden Markram nothing up an unbeaten century and skipper Themba Bavuma an impressive unbeaten half-century – despite a confirmed hamstring sprain – Prince says coach Shukri Conrad should be credited for controlling the emotions.

"It's about making sure that everybody stays calm within the dressing room, so as soon as Aiden and Temba came up the stairs, the first thing [Conrad] said was, 'Guys, you do the same as you do every night, don't change a thing, tomorrow you come and do the same,'" shared Prince.

"It's just the same processes, we obviously understand the magnitude of the situation and what's at stake, but it's just to stay calm and take it in your stride."

SA will not be in a hurry to wrap things up on the penultimate day, despite being close to winning their most important test match in history.

According to the former opener, the plan is to do it well and not necessarily quickly.

The Proteas, who finished on 213-2, closed to within 69 runs of victory thanks to a superb unbeaten hundred from opener Aiden Markram after Australia had earlier set a target of 282 runs for victory.

Markram, alongside captain Temba Bavuma (65 not out), put on an unbroken stand of 143 for the third wicket which broke the back of what would be the joint second-highest successful run chase at the Home of Cricket.

And although Australia now face an uphill challenge on day four, Vettori knows the players will take their attempted fightback one step at a time and not look too far ahead into the future.

"There's no desire to get ahead of ourselves," Vettori said. "One wicket, that's the starting point. And because these two (Markram and Bavuma) are in such control, if we can get a new batsman to the crease, then that's the start of it.

The 30-year-old, who was dismissed without scoring in the first innings, watched on as opening partner Ryan Rickelton was out early but it did not deter the stylish right-handed batter.

Markram cracked 11 fours and brought up his eighth, and most important, Test hundred in the penultimate over the day and, together with his captain Temba Bavuma (65 not out), took the Proteas to 213-2 at stumps, still needing further 69 runs to complete what would be a monumental and epic victory.

The milestone moment brought a huge roar from the heavy South African supporters contingent at the Home of Cricket with Markram visibly emotional and soaking up the atmosphere when reaching the milestone.

"We certainly know that he's someone for the big occasion," Proteas batting coach Ashwell Prince told reporters at the post-play presser.

"He has done some technical work but not a lot. In the last little while, he has had a tendency to push his hands away from his body and cut across the ball but it was not a big fix and as soon as he saw a few videos, it was simple.

"When I talk about his ability to play big innings - albeit in a losing cause (against India) at Newlands on a very, very difficult pitch - he played an unbelievable innings.

"Everybody else was really struggling, and he got 100 on that surface. So we know what he's capable of."

The Proteas know the job at hand is not done with Markram and Bavuma looking to extend their 143-run partnership and win a trophy that could the landscape of South African cricket for the better.

What would have pleased Prince and the Proteas coaching staff is that two senior players in the skipper and his deputy stood up when the team needed them after being bundled out for just 138 in the first innings.

Chasing a fourth-innings target of 282, Markram was still at the crease on 102 as his team went to the close of play in a strong position of 213-2, just 69 runs short becoming world champions.

Markram was sublime in his stroke-play and struck 11 fours while is innings took just 159 deliveries as the opener transferred the pressure back onto the Australia bowlers.

It was a far cry from the first innings effort when they were tentative and slow out of the blocks and were bowled out for just 138, responding to a total of 212.

Markram watched from the other end as opening partner Ryan Rickelton fell early, caught behind for six, chasing a wide delivery from left-arm quick Mitchell Starc.

Wiaan Mulder then combined with Markram for a crucial 61-run partnership that certainly helped take the shine off the new ball that did so much damage in the first innings.

Mulder made his way to 27 before playing an uppish drive and Marnus Labuschagne snapped up a sharp chance in the covers to leave the Proteas on 70-2.

Bavuma had a frenetic start - going for a lavish drive over the cover second, inside-edging close to his stumps and then being dropped in the slips by Steve Smith.

The Proteas captain then suffered a hamstring strain on his left leg and required lengthy treatment before resuming, but noticeably limping through singles and only taking twos when it was absolutely sure.

The injury seemed to settle the South African skipper down somewhat and he did just that, as he brought up a half-century off 83 balls.

The biggest ovation of the day though came just before the close when Markram brought up his eighth Test century, and the emotion was visible on the 30-year-old's face as he soaked up the applause at the Home of Cricket.

South Africa's captain and deputy then saw out the day and left the field to a standing ovation as the Proteas dare to dream of finally breaking their ICC curse on what could be a glorius Saturday at Lord's.

The Proteas began the day needing to take the final two Australia wickets quickly and the first was not long in coming, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada trapping Nathan Lyon lbw in the third over of the morning.

But it was a tale of frustration for the fielding side thereafter as Starc and Josh Hazlewood dug in.

Starc, dropped on 14 by Marco Jansen late the previous evening, repelled a flurry of short balls and soaked up pressure effectively with the field spread far and wide.

He took advantage of any loose deliveries, too, with five boundaries helping him to an 11th Test half-century as Australia's final pair carried them to the brink of the lunch break.

The innings was eventually brought to a close when Hazlewood drove Markram to Keshav Maharaj at cover, leaving Starc unbeaten on 58 and ensuring South Africa would require 282 to be crowned champions.

Jake White: Bulls must find 'that little bit extra' to claim URC glory

The Bulls head into their third URC final in four seasons chasing an elusive title, having fallen short in their previous two attempts. Standing in their way is a battle-hardened Leinster side hungry to lift the trophy on home soil for the first time, with the decider set to take place at a sold-out Croke Park.

Speaking to media on Thursday, White responded to comments from Leinster's Dan Sheehan, who suggested the hosts are more desperate to win. White, however, believes motivation is a given at this level - and the margin for success comes down to something harder to define.

Ntokozo Makhaza will play for the Springboks one day, says Bok boss

His exploits for Ikeys during the last two tournaments not only led to a contract with the Cheetahs but also back-to-back Player of the Year and Backline Player of the Year awards. And subsequently, a shock call-up to the Springboks squad.

Erasmus has now revealed the reasoning behind his call-up and detailed how Makhaza has fitted into the set-up.

"It's been a pleasure since the first day we phoned him," Erasmus said after the second day of the Springboks' on-field training camp.

"As a coaching team, we have been together since 2018, and we have tried to look at all the structures from the SA Cup, Currie Cup and so on, but we are never really sure. If we grab a player from the Japanese league, Top 14 or Premiership, you can sort of gauge where they are.

"With him being consistently the top scorer in the Varsity Cup's history, being 22,23 years old, you sort of feel that he is one of the players who slipped through the net.

"And you will never know until you work with him and find out his personality, and then meet him on the field. We know that if we pick up a Currie Cup player, it will take a while for him to reach the Springbok level."

The Bok boss is certain that Makhaza will one day play for the Test team but says that the coaching team and players are realistic about his current capabilities, having yet to play a professional match.

Still, Erasmus is mightily impressed with the winger's ability off the tee, particularly when considering that he played much of the Varsity Cup in Cape Town with infamous windy conditions.

"He is someone we believe can definitely play for the Springboks, it might be a bit too early now, but we knew that we would be without some players with the Bulls and Sharks at this camp," he continued.

"Guys like Makazole Mapimpi or Kurt-Lee Arendse wouldn't be here with the URC final, so there was a gap in the wing position.

"He slotted in really well, but we are all realistic about him. I think he can one day play for the Springboks, it's not around the corner like in the next two or three weeks, but he is certainly not way off the pace.

"A guy who kicks very close to 92% for UCT in that windy weather and does so that consistently, that's nine or 12 points in a match for you. So I think he is going to make it one day."

Hull City snap up talented young Moroccan midfielder

It’s out in the open now that Truter has parted ways with the Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit, having joined them last year with the mandate to try and get them promoted to the topflight.

With City missing out, the club has decided to make another attempt next season – although allowing the coach to move on and beginning their search for his successor ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Truter on the other hand, his agent Basia Michaels has told SABC Sport, is plotting his own way back to the elite league.

“It would not be right to first acknowledge that chairman David Mogashoa was once more keen to give coach Truter a chance to promote another lower division team like he did with Swallows a few years ago,” Michaels explained.

“As is common, there was a review of the season at the club and the best way forward seemed to give Coach Brakkies an opportunity to explore possibilities that might come up in the Betway Premiership.

"It’s unfortunate that Upington City were not able to get as far as the play-offs at least, but they are not too far off from that target, from what we can see."

Pressed on whether Truter had become unattached because of enquiries from other topflight clubs during the off season, Michaels was coy.

“Let us not get ahead of ourselves. A lot of the clubs are reviewing the previous campaign and maybe we will get a call,” she said.

Gyokeres' statement comes amid reports of growing friction between the player's camp and Sporting CP's leadership, with sources suggesting he is frustrated over what he perceives as a broken agreement regarding his summer transfer.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas insisted earlier this week that the club has received no formal offers for the striker, despite strong interest from Arsenal and Manchester United. While Gyokeres' release clause stands at 100 million pounds, Varandas has acknowledged a willingness to negotiate - just not at the levels currently being reported.

His recent form includes a third-place finish at the Cape Town leg of the series in May, when he clocked 28:06.

“Over the past two years, I’ve been running faster, but this time I need to dig even deeper,” Mokoka told SABC Sport.

“Bernard Lagat had to travel from the U.S. to race in Manchester. Here at home, Absa is giving us the opportunity to compete locally in various cities against some of the world’s best young talent.

"These young guys are running well – you can’t reach the podium anymore with a 28:10. I’m excited with the way my training is going, and the platform this incredible event provides. I’m hopeful I can break the master's record.”

Lagat also broke the world masters record in 2015, which was witnessed by Mokoka himself, and nearly a decade later, he now finds himself chasing that very mark.

"I can say it’s a goal. I was there the day Lagat set the world master’s record. Time really flies. Hopefully, with good weather this time, I can achieve it," he added.

“It’s not easy, but the young guys at UJ are pushing me hard—they really burn my chest—and the past few weeks have been enjoyable.

The hosts, who finished top of Group A, have lost striker Wandile Duba following his withdrawal earlier this week, and Khumalo says the talented group in camp are ready to step up.

"Not exactly, the team is looking good. We're having a few players, Duba is not part of us anymore – he left the camp, and the rest are here, the players that we started with," said Khumalo.

"All of them have had some game time, which was very important for our senior coach Hugo [Broos] to have a look at all the players here and maybe give him a bigger headache.

"And, to be honest with you, we have a talented squad here, a good team, positive young men, and we are looking forward to the semis and the final, and ultimately lifting the trophy."

The national ‘B’ team has struggled to find the back of the net in the tournament so far, having scored only two goals in three matches, but Khumalo feels they have worked hard enough in their last two sessions to rectify that.

"Look, I think our session was more about converting our chances – finishing, finishing, finishing, the entire session was more about trying to convert from different angles," he explained.

"Hopefully this will filter into the match. Each and every session have been geared towards finishing, and [Thursday] we spent most of the time in the final third, and even scoring from a distance, and I wish this will be related into the game."
