Springboks captain Siya Kolisi has issued a rallying cry for momentum heading into their opening Test against Wales this evening.

South Africa will return to action following a seven-month hiatus when they suffered defeat to England at Twickenham in November last year.

Thankfully, this time the Boks will run out to a 50 000-capacity crowd - a new attendance record for a match against Wales - at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this evening, after the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted last month.

Kolisi is relishing the opportunity to turn things on in front of the home support as they look to build momentum for the three encounters with Wales, before they welcome New Zealand in the Rugby Championship next month.

"That's something we're all excited about as a team. I think the last time we played at home was against Argentina, before the World Cup, at Loftus actually," Kolisi said in a pre-match briefing on Friday.

"We obviously want to build momentum, that's what we wanted to achieve last year, and I think the tough part last year was how close the games we lost were.

"Obviously the coaches did a lot of research on what made us suffer those losses, and now that's what we're working on this year - how we can make sure those two-point differences come our way so that we build momentum going forward.

"Coach Rassie and Coach Jaques always say, it's all about building depth - you can see the squad we have and we are winning so, hopefully, people get opportunities while thinking of going to the World Cup next year."

Kick-off is set for 17h05.
