Update on Domingo injury after reckless tackle

The injury suffered by Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Haashim Domingo on Saturday night isn’t worse than first feared, SABC Sport has established.

Following a horrific tackle by Orlando Pirates defender Tapelo Xoki during the final of the Carling Black Label Cup at FNB Stadium, the Downs attacker had to be stretched off and there were initial concerns that he could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after he clutched his ankle in serious pain.

Domingo was substituted immediately and headed for the tunnel, while Xoki was red carded to leave the Buccaneers a man down and eventually losing the game 4-0.

The public broadcaster’s sport desk has now been informed that Domingo currently only has a swollen ankle and the early assessment is that he has not damaged any ligaments – however, a scan at a later stage will give a conclusive diagnosis. According to doctors’ orders the swelling must first subside.

Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena did not have a fresh update when asked about the injury during his live TV interview after the match.
“It looked serious,” Mokwena told SABC Sport.

“But we’ve got time now to assess it. There is not real update at the moment or proper diagnosis because he hasn’t had any medical assessment. These sort of tackles were not necessary. It’s a pity they were promoted by people you don’t expect.”

The Brazilians, along with their DStv Premiership counterparts, don’t return to action until 30 December as the Premier Soccer League breaks for the FIFA World Cup getting underway in Qatar in a week’s time.

Coincidentally, Sundowns will play Pirates in their first fixture when the league resumes.
