Supersport United sink Maritzburg in second half blitz

Bradley Grobler scored his 100th PSL goal as Supersport United turned on the class in the second half to sink Maritzburg United 2-0 in their DStv Premiership clash on Friday.

Lucas Moripe Stadium played host to a game of two contrasting halves on a balmy evening in Pretoria.

Maritzburg would earn the opening chance nine minutes in, with Wayde Jooste's rocket free kick forcing a save out of Supersport stopper Ricardo Goss, who also showed great skill to stop the rebound from Karim Kimvuidi.

Supersport collected themselves after the early shock and enjoyed the lion's share of the ball as they looked to press.

While easy yards were made down the wings, the crosses could not connect with their striker upfront.

The Team of Choice then had Bradley Cross to thank on the even of the break, as the defender intercepted a crucial pass that would have put Thamsanqa Gabuza one-on-one with Renaldo Leaner.

In the second stanza, Supersport coach Gavin Hunt made what turned out to be an inspired replacement, as Gamphani Lungu came on for Gabuza.

The Zambian made an immediate impact with a dangerous ball being headed home by Kegan Johannes to break the deadlock in the 69th minute.

Matsatsantsa kept the pressure up and eventually won a penalty 11 minutes from time.

Grobler stepped up to the mark and while Leaner saved his initial shot, the veteran powered home the volley for a memorable moment.
