Sundowns continue march to PSL title with victory over Swallows

The Mamelodi Sundowns juggernaut continued to roll smoothly towards another PSL title after a 2-0 victory over Swallows at Loftus on Tuesday.

Second half goals from Neo Maema and Themba Zwane was enough for the defending champions to move seven points clear at the top of the table above rivals SuperSport United.

As expected, Masandawana dominated possession against the team that sit second from bottom on the table but failed to create any clear-cut opportunities in the first half.

Swallows were starved of the ball in the opening period but almost took a shock lead in the 18th minute when a free-kick found the head of Kwanda Mngonyama but Ronwen Williams in the Sundowns produced a fine low save.

The best effort the hosts could muster was a long-range shot from Teboho Mokoena that went wide.

The second half followed the same pattern but Sundowns seemed to have more cutting edge after the interval and it was a matter of time before the opening arrived.

Just after the hour mark Khuliso Mudau whipped in dangerous cross from right and the ball found its way to Maema who had time and space in the box and buried a left-footed strike into the back of the net.

It was 2-0 three minutes later with Zwane finishing off a move that started deep inside their own half and ended with the Bafana Bafana midfielder playing a neat one-two with Cassius Mailula before the eventual strike.

Swallows came close to pulling a goal back with 13 minutes remaining but substitute Lindokuhle Mtshali saw his powerful header cannon off the cross-bar with Williams beaten.

That was the only scare the men in yellow had though as they saw out closing stages of the contest without further alarms.
