Temba Bavuma happy with Shukri Conrad white ball appointment

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has welcomed the decision to appoint Shukri Conrad as coach for the limited overs teams, saying he’s got a close relationship with the players and is seen as a father figure.

Cricket South Africa announced last week that the team’s red ball coach since 2023 will take over both the One Day International and T20 teams immediately, after Rob Walter stepped down from the role on April 1.

Part of the reasoning from CSA was that he already knows the players, and has proved his mettle in the longest format of the game. Bavuma shared the sentiments.

“I think you have a guy who’s seen it all, you know. The success that he’s achieved as well within the test stuff within the two years has been remarkable, with a team that doesn’t boast legendary names at this point in time. But for us to achieve what we’ve achieved speaks a lot for him as a coach”, said Bavuma.

Conrad’s contract runs until the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup here at home, and Bavuma believes there’s already a plan on how to achieve success within the two years.

“With him there’ll definitely be a vision in place, or a strategy as to what we’re going to achieve and how we’re going to achieve it. I look forward to further working with Shukri. Hopefully continuing doing some remarkable things for the country in the other formats”, concluded the skipper.

Conrad’s first assignment as white ball coach will be to lead South Africa in a T20 tri-series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand in Harare in July.

He will then need plot how they’re going to try and win the T20 World Cup in India and Sri-Lanka in February and March 2026, before the big one on home soil the following year.
