Robinson and Tongue put England in command as Pakistan collapse at Headingley

England's bowlers delivered a statement performance on the opening day at Headingley, with Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue taking five wickets each to dismiss Pakistan for 171 and give Joe Root an ideal return to the Test captaincy.

Root opted to field after winning the toss and Robinson struck immediately, trapping Azan Awais lbw with the first delivery. The seamer also removed Shan Masood before rain briefly halted England's progress, eventually finishing with 5-51 from 18 overs.

Pakistan appeared to regain control after the interruption through Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq, who added 91 for the fourth wicket. Shafique reached 61 while Imam made 42, but Tongue broke the partnership by having Imam caught behind the bat at second slip by Harry Brook.

Robinson then dismissed Saud Shakeel lbw, with Pakistan deciding against a review after failing to beat the time limit. Replays indicated the delivery would have missed leg stump.

Shafique was next to go, edging a Robinson delivery that moved back through the gap between his bat and pad as Pakistan slipped to 118-5.

From there, Tongue tore through the lower order. Salman Agha made 21 before Tongue removed Ali Usman with the next delivery, while Mohammad Rizwan was also among his victims. His remarkable spell yielded four wickets for just five runs in 11 balls, and he eventually finished with 5-46 from 9.1 overs.

Robinson completed his five-wicket haul before Tongue bowled Mohammad Abbas to end Pakistan's innings in 48.1 overs. The tourists had lost their final seven wickets for only 54 runs.

England were unable to make an entirely trouble-free start with the bat, however. Abbas dismissed Ben Duckett before Mohammad Ali accounted for debutant Emilio Gay, leaving the hosts 48-2.

Root responded with a composed unbeaten 37, joined by Jordan Cox on 23 not out. Cox has stepped up to No. 3 following Jacob Bethell's injury, and the pair added an unbroken 64 to take England to 112-2 at the close.

England trail by just 59 runs and will resume on Thursday with Root and Cox firmly in control after a day dominated by their fast bowlers.
