Proteas Women skipper shares relief after Sri Lanka DLS victory

Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt expressed relief after their 10-wicket thrashing of co-hosts Sri-Lanka via the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method at the ICC Women’s World Cup on Friday.

South Africa notched up their fourth win on the trot, having earlier gotten the better of New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh following a tournament-opening defeat to England.

The rain-drenched affair had to be reduced to 20 overs a side, with Wolvaardt admitting they were unsettled upon coming back onto the pitch.

"A big relief, I think, especially after that five-hour break. I think we looked a bit nervy when we came back on the field, with a couple of misfields," said 'Wolvie'.

"So I think we did a great job of sort of regrouping in the innings and getting those wickets near the end, but especially after our last game against another sub-continent side where we found ourselves in a bit of trouble, it was nice to have a convincing win against a similar side."

Wolvaardt has not been entirely satisfied with her performance at the competition and was happy with how herself and Tazmin Brits grabbed the bull by the horns to see the team home and dry, scoring an unbeaten 60 and 55 respectively.

"Very nice [to get some runs]. It obviously hasn't been the best tournament for me overall, so it's very nice to hit a few [runs], and obviously a reduced game so I just sort-of thought normal T20 plans," she added.

"So Taz and I just went out as if it was a normal T20, and both got off to decent starts and just kept going."
