Proteas fall short in mammoth run-chase as India seal T20I series victory

The Proteas fell short in a mammoth run-chase to lose by 30 runs in the fifth and final T20I against India in Ahmedabad as the hosts sealed a 3-1 victory in the five-match series.

Chasing a target of 232, Quinton de Kock gave the Proteas an explosive start with 65 off 35 balls as the visitors reached 120-2 in the 11th over.

Dewald Brevis chipped in with a 17-ball 31 but there were not enough bigger contributions throughout the rest of the batting order.

Varun Chakravarthy was the destroyer-in-chief for India as the spinner, after being expensive in his second over, finished with figures of 4-53 in four overs.

Proteas eventually reached 201-8 in their 20 overs as the hosts took the honours.

Earlier, India pummeled their way to a total of 231-5 in 20 overs after being put in to bat at the toss by Aiden Markram.

Tilak Varma top-scored with 73 from 42 balls while Hardik Pandya blasted 65 off just 25 deliveries.

The home side were given a good platform when opening pair Sanju Samson (37) and Abhishek Sharma (34) who put on 63 in the powerplay.

The Proteas will look back on a tour that saw them win a Test series in India for the first time in 25 years before going down 2-1 in the ODI series and the losing the T20I leg.
