Asif Afridi, Faisal Akram and Rohail Nazir are three uncapped players included in Pakistan's extended squad of 18 for the Test series at home against the Proteas that starts in Lahore on 12 October.

Shan Masood will continue as Test captain and will join the group - minus the players who are returning from the Asia Cup - for a training camp over the next week.

Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Salman Agha and Shaheen Shah Afridi are the players who are part of Test squad that played in the Asia Cup and will only join the group on 4 October.

The batting department has an experienced feel to it with Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, Saud Shakeel joining skipper Masood.

Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali and Aamir Jamal will lead the pace attack while Sajid Khan, Noman Ali and Abrar are the slow-bowlers in what is expected to be spin-friendly conditions.

Of the uncapped trio, the 38-year-old spin-bowling allrounder Afridi is a veteran of 57 first-class matches, in which he has taken 198 wickets at an average of 25.49.

The 22-year-old Akram is a wrist-spinner and has only played nine first-class matches, taking 44 wickets at an average of 30.95, but has already represented Pakistan in three ODIs.

The 23-year-old Nazir is a highly-rated wicketkeeper-batter who averages 34.45 in 43 first-class games since making his debut in the 2018-19 season.
