Marizanne Kapp shines with bat and ball as Proteas Women down Pakistan

All-rounder Marizanne Kapp starred with both bat and ball for the Proteas Women in their fifth win of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup over Pakistan.

SA Women crushed their opponents by 150 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in Colombo, with Kapp contributing 68 with the willow, and then returning impressive bowling figures of 3/20 in the heavily rain-affected encounter.

She says everyone in the team has made their contributions at this tournament, which bodes well for them going forward.

"I think it was a very good performance with the bat. Laura and Sune set it up nicely for us to come in and play our game.

"We are a bit disappointed that we couldn't get the 50 overs in, but like I've said, everyone has had a good hit and most of our batters have confidence."

It would have seemed very hard to imagine Kapp and her team in this sort of form after they suffered a heavy defeat to England in their opening match.

She was happy with how they turned things around after that defeat, and they have now qualified for the semi-finals.

"Look, we were very disappointed with that performance against England. Luckily, we turned our fortunes around very quickly, which is a testament to all the hard work the girls have been putting in behind the scenes."

Coach Mandla Mashimbyi has always stressed that the key is to do the small things well, and Kapp feels that they’ve done exactly that.

She does admit the bowling unit needs to be more disciplined in the knockout matches.

Nadine de Klerk has been one of the key players for South Africa at this World Cup, and has at times singlehandedly won the game for them.

Kapp says she always had the potential and is finally tapping into it.

"We've always known that Nadine is greatly talented, and I've always rated her highly as a batting all-rounder. It seems like her batting has really started to click this year, which is very exciting for us as a team."
