Kusal Mendis confirmed as Sri Lanka Test captain after Dhananjaya de Silva resigns

Kusal Mendis has been confirmed as the new Test captain of Sri Lanka after Dhananjaya de Silva stepped down from the position to leave leadership duties "to the next generation".

The 35-year-old Dhananjaya led Sri Lanka in 18 Tests after being appointed in February 2024, winning seven to go with eight losses and three draws.

The top-order batter and off-spinner made it known that he will remain available for selection to look to add to his 69 Test caps.

"Sri Lanka Cricket wishes (De Silva) the very best for the remainder of his career and thanks him for the leadership he provided to our Test team," SLC chief executive Ashley de Silva said in a statement.

Mendis was named Sri Lanka white-ball captain in May, and will now be in charge in all three formats, with his first assignment in red-ball cricket to come in a series away to Pakistan next month.

In 22 matches in charge in ODIs - he first led in the format in October 2023 - Mendis has overseen ten wins and ten defeats.

Sri Lanka are almost certainly out of the running for a top-two finish in the current World Test Championship cycle, sitting seventh on the table with only West Indies and Pakistan behind them.
